Hiee people This year our college has organized a "Google Whack Competition". Here is the info Note : The word should be a dictionary word. Please help me to find such a word Rgds B2L
Hello Born2Learn. Maybe a long word will give fewer results. The chemical name for the coat protein of the tobacco mosaic virus (Dahlemense Strain) was termed in 1972 and currently holds the record for the longest word in an English language publication used in a serious context (1185-letter word). GOOGLE=3,610 acetylseryltyrosylserylisoleucylthreonylserylprolylserylglutaminylphenylalanylvalylphenylalanylleucylserylserylvalyltryptophylalanylaspartylprolylisoleucylglutamylleucylleucylasparaginylvalylcysteinylthreonylserylserylleucylglycylasparaginylglutaminylphenylalanylglutaminylthreonylglutaminylglutaminylalanylarginylthreonylthreonylglutaminylvalylglutaminylglutaminylphenylalanylserylglutaminylvalyltryptophyllysylprolylphenylalanylprolylglutaminylserylthreonylvalylarginylphenylalanylprolylglycylaspartylvalyltyrosyllysylvalyltyrosylarginyltyrosylasparaginylalanylvalylleucylaspartylprolylleucylisoleucylthreonylalanylleucylleucylglycylthreonylphenylalanylaspartylthreonylarginylasparaginylarginylisoleucylisoleucylglutamylvalylglutamylasparaginylglutaminylglutaminylserylprolylthreonylthreonylalanylglutamylthreonylleucylaspartylalanylthreonylarginylarginylvalylaspartylaspartylalanylthreonylvalylalanylisoleucylarginylserylalanylasparaginylisoleucylasparaginylleucylvalylasparaginylglutamylleucylvalylarginylglycylthreonylglycylleucyltyrosylasparaginylglutaminylasparaginylthreonylphenylalanylglutamylserylmethionylserylglycylleucylvalyltryptophylthreonylserylalanylprolylalanylserie Unfortunately, the full chemical name for Tintin (protein important in the contraction of striated muscle tissue) has yet to be listed in any major dictionary = 189,819 letters. The more commonly accepted longest word, 'Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis' (45 letters) = lung disease contracted from the inhalation of fine silicon dioxide particles, specifically from a volcano. GOOGLE=48,700 However, I noted that Bohra's lovely 'Haphephobia' = fear of being touched, yielded: GOOGLE=35,800 Actually, the phobia world might be an interesting avenue to explore: e.g. Pteridophobia = fear of ferns GOOGLE=19,600 Walloonphobia = fear of walloons (French Belgians) GOOGLE=12,900 Omphalophobia = fear of the navel or belly button GOOGLE= 6,770 Good luck and please let us know the winning word !
^^ But which is that word (Titin's chemical name ? ) . When I try that big word of 1185 letters , google gives me error (Try shorter word)
The difficulty here is the inconsistency between dictionaries as to which words are deemed worthy of inclusion e.g. differences in opinion as to the use of additional affixes to lengthen words or neologisms by 'respected' authors may be included yet words in common use may be discounted etc. The Oxford English dictionary is considered by many as the authoritative source on such matters and contains approximately one quarter of a million distinct English words, although the Global Language Monitor (Web site that uses a math formula to estimate how often words are created) noted that as of Wednesday 5:22 a.m.ET. June 2009, the English language aquired its millionth word "Web 2.0" (a rather an underwhelming inclusion for such an historic moment !) I would have thought that a low search result is achieved by choosing a word that is not in common usage. The Tobacco Mosaic Virus (1,185 word) above was listed in the Guinness Book Of Records but removed in later editions due to the difficulties associated with acceptance of chemical names e.g. DNA molecule = 1+ billion letters if written out in full. It's strange that Google sometimes returns a search result for me in that format but definitely returns a result when the word is split i.e. Acetyl seryl tyrosyl seryl iso leucyl threonyl etc. However, given the debate regarding the above example, as well as for 'Titin' (opps..as you note not our comic friend Tintin lol) which cannot be shown in a DP thread due to its ridiculous length (Link), there are some accepted chemical names e.g. Tetramethyldiaminobenzhydrylphosphinous (Type of acid) GOOGLE= 1,930 This is the longest chemical term in the Oxford English Dictionary (2nd Ed.). Although it does not have its own entry it is included under citation for another word. Formaldehydetetramethylamidofluorimum GOOGLE=681 Chemical term in the Oxford English Dictionary (2nd Ed.) Dimethylamidophenyldimethylpyrazolone GOOGLE=598 Chemical term in the Oxford English Dictionary (2nd Ed.). However, if chemical names are not your thing, maybe 'Disproportionableness' GOOGLE=4,650
