    Hi all,

A friend has come to me an issue with their website - they seem to have a Google penalty applied to their site. I've heard of this before, but I've never actually seen it.

If you type their title tags in to Google (and they are pretty unique with brand + keyword) they don't even get in to the top 50!! Their site is in Google though and appears at the top when you type their URL.

This to me suggests they definitely have some form of penalty applied to them and he thinks it's down to a dodgey link being built to his site by an SEO guy in the past, although I cant see the dodgey link now.

He is going through a re-consideration process with Google, but I was wondering if there was anything else that could be done to speed things up with regards to getting Google to like his site more?

Also has anyone heard of this happening in this way before?

    Misch

Penalization is quite common. Clean up the site. Build up some quality back links. Then resubmission.

If doesn't work. Purchase new domain, 301 redirect might be the smartest option.

Your friends site is not in the top 50 and you call that a penalty? There are plenty of sites
NOT in the top 50. I think you left out some info.

it takes a while to recover from being penalized. Just be sure to clean everything up, remove everything that isn't completely white-hat, and then wait it out. Thats about all you can do.

And what's the link building activity of the site now? Maybe it just lack in good backlinks since you didn't see the dodgey link anymore, build strong links now...

Without given url here I do not think you would get the right answer. Please be aware that there are plenty reason for the banning applied to your friends site. I can ask only plain question here to help more.

    1. You said that site is not ranked for their own title, but is it still has an indexed pages in Google?

    2. Is that site still has link popularity in Google?

    3. How old is that site? Count from the first day website was published.

    4. Did that site ever do cross linking scheme between websites hosted under same IP and owned by same owner?
