You actually have no way of knowing which links Google classes as spam.

Here is a copy/paste from an e-mail I sent to someone who had the exact same question-

Removing backlinks is very risky. First of all, you yourself do not know which links Google deem as 'bad' and which they deem as 'good'. What tends to happen is webmasters panic and remove any links they think are bad, but what actually happens is they end up removing a lot of the good links as well. It is impossible to tell which links Google classes as good or bad. The only signal that Google actually gives us to classify a link as bad is if the root domain has been deindexed.

The other major issue with removing backlinks is you create a negative link velocity. If a site is losing links hand over fist then it will plummet in the rankings.

This is what I see people doing-

    1) Get WMT message
    2) Lose rankings traffic
    3) Remove lots of links that they themselves decide are bad (not google)
    4) Submit reinclusion request
    5) Expect rankings to return

The only problem is in the process of removing bad links, the webmaster has removed lots of the good links as well and on top of that isn't doing anything to replace the bad links they have removed. Its a double edged sword.

What actually needs to happen when removing links is for every link you remove, you need to build 2 in its place and you should only remove links coming from deindexed domains. That way you do not risk removing your good links and you have a positive link velocity while reducing the number of deindexed domains linknig to you.

The first thing you need to do is perform an analysis of your current backlink profile, this willhelp you identify exactly what is wrong and you will be able to come up with a positive plan of action instead of just 'guessing' whats wrong blindly.

If you need help with that have a look at my tutorial http://www.matthewwoodward.co.uk/tu...acklink-profile-for-current-future-penalties/

Unnatural links are the links you submitted on purpose. Try to remove not related links those are deemed to be spam links.

Google considers those links as an unnatural links:
    • Large percentage of blog/forum links.
    • Large percentage of footer links.
    • Unnatural anchor text distribution.
    • Back links which are coming from only one URL.
