We received the message below, around 3 weeks ago.

Dear site owner or webmaster of xyz,

we’ve detected that some of your site's pages may be using techniques that are outside Google's Webmaster Guidelines.

Specifically, look for possibly artificial or unnatural links pointing to your site that could be intended to manipulate PageRank. Examples of unnatural linking could include buying links to pass PageRank or participating in link schemes.

We encourage you to make changes to your site so that it meets our quality guidelines. Once you've made these changes, please submit your site for reconsideration in Google's search results.

If you find unnatural links to your site that you are unable to control or remove, please provide the details in your reconsideration request.

If you have any questions about how to resolve this issue, please see our Webmaster Help Forum for support.

    Sincerely,

    Google Search Quality Team

We have been around for about 6 years, in that time we have done all sorts of SEO via so called SEO Specialists? Probably not ideal, but what made us successful has now come to bit us in teh behind!

We have without question, breached Google Guidelines.

Since receiving this message, we have removed all knowledgeable paid links; all inter links from various sites that we operate. We then went back to Google and applied for a reconsideration request, only to get a standard automated response, that we still violate there guidelines.

So now we have a run a linking report and over the years we have accumulated 10,000's of links. Some clearly built, some natural and some clearly scrapped from the site.

We have compiled a list of links that now manually need removing - it’s going to be a task in itself and even when we have removed all the suspect ones, I dare say there is no guarantee Google will consider site reconsideration. Just as there is no guarantee that we will remove the same links that Google are looking at.

    I have three questions

    1. Has anyone else suffered the same and managed to get the reconsideration accepted
    2. Has anyone ever entered into email exchange over something similar, is there a way round the automated, non-human exchange with Google? If I could fly out and speak to someone I would (not that, that will ever happen)!
    3. Does anyone know of an individual or Company that specialise in the removal of links?

I really appreciate the time that anyone takes in reading above, I have not posted before and I would appreciate any assistance or advise that anyone can give.

    Thanks
