Great finding, kudos for that. Off course it wasn't new info that google don't like comment spam. Basically I think that this is just another cry for help and that Google can't solve this problem on it's own using it's technology. That's why they try to scare people off. If it wasn't paying off there wouldn't be that much offers here on DP selling comment spam ;)

I wrote a blogpost about it at: http://www.sakoo.net/seo/comment-spamming-googles-cry-for-help/

It all comes down to a site's link profile. If google sees a site is getting the majority of links from blog comments, angela/paul links or the other easy ones like directory submissions, then it is an obvious indication that the webmaster is trying to game the SERPs. For a site which has been well established, a competitor will have a difficult time to get a rival's site banned because an authority site will have a varied link profile and a substantial number of links would be editorial. For a newer or less established site, google might sandboxed or penalised the site and you will need to have a solid case to convince google of your innocence.

There are two things worth noting - one is that less established sites have rankings which fluctuate a lot, so a competitor will not go through the trouble of acquiring lots of links to get these sites banned, second less established site cannot rank well for competitive keywords, they might do for long tails. Again competitors want the keywords with the greater number of searches and if they were going to do something evil, they will do it for the competitive terms. But that's just my opinion anyway...

When is a comment spam? What is a comment, when is it spam?
How many comments a day can you make, before it's too much for Google?
This google-policy is leading too nothing actually?
I received a commercial letter this month, in which they propose their marketing services...how can i take this seriously, while webmasters can get penalized if there could be (?) something they did wrong?
It's like obeying god, or you go to hell.

This is what's happening to me right now: I have a phone blog. Written in english. Quite large. While checking the reffering sites i noticed alot of spanish blogs in the last week.

I checked and it looks that some retard is posting a comment about a specific phone then provides a link to the page on my site about that phone.

And it does that daily, in all major spanish blogs, every time they mention the phone, he allways posts the same comment and same link. So far i've traked the link on more than 100 blogs. In a week. And it does not seem to stop, he added 10 more comments this morning.

I don't know why he's doing it, to harm me, to promote me, to make a name for himself in the spanish tech comunity, or he's just immature, donno.

Now I ask you: what can I do? I can't contact him in any way. I tried leaving comments after his comment asking him to stop, and no effect. I can't contact all 100+ webmasters asking to remove the comments.

So is it fair for google to ban my site because of this idiot?

Well it would work like this..... but it kills me to give competitors info on how to stop shooting themselves in the foot.

Google is a database driven websites that makes use of empirical and historical data to aide them in deciding who is spamming and who is not.

So lets take the competitor can not be done harm thoughts for example.

Google has lets say two years of data on Site A Competitor that tells them they have built 10 blog comment links per month, each month, for 24 months. This tells Google quite a bit about Site A Competitor.

So a spammer comes along who wants to hurt Site A Competitor, by building blog spam comment links and in his first month builds 100 blog comment links to Site A Competitor.

Google will notice the spike in new links to Site A Competitor and determine that it is out of character and devalue the new links do that it has no detrimental or positive effects for Site A Competitor.

I won't say how long of a period this takes for Goggle to work things out, but lets says it would likely be once a quarter......

    :)

I am really happy with this improvement. It will definitely help to improve the quality of the net.

    Sorry spammers.... :)

I wonder how will this kind of sites survive now like linkvana.com

They charge $147 for comment spamming. :)

Must be influenced by your display pic. I smell flirting there. :)

Holy crap there is a lot to read here. Let me set the record straight here.

Fact: Google created the spam (creating backlinks) because they said openly, the more links to your site, the better it must be.

Result: What the hell did they expect to happen?

Fact: There is a field in comments to enter a URL.

Result: Why the hell can't I put my frigging website in there? Isn't that what it's there for? Additionally, why the hell doesn't google petition the internet to remove the url from blogs?

    -----
So, now links in forums to our sites are spam? Who the hell is there to say whether my comments suck or are just there so I can post a link to my site? This is dumb shit as far as I'm concerned. What backlinks will count now? I hate when Google tries to use subjectivity. They aren't human so how do they know if my comments are important on the subject or whether I'm posting just to get a link? Again, they might as well just say backlinks are worth shit, unless they are scrutinized heavily and aren't you linking your own site. This subject pisses me off.

Now they want you, as a blogger etc to deal with people trying to get links. Again, why they hell do you include the "add your website" field then? It's like people are garbage if they are linking to their own site. Essentially all of us here are scumbags because we have links in our sigs. Therefore, we are spamming because our sigs have dick to do with most of the topics here. Remember they created the mess. Another example of one company running the internet. If they controlled everyone, then you wouldn't have a url in your sig, there wouldn't be any add your website links in blog comments, and in fact, there really shouldn't be any urls, good or bad or relevant or irrelevant allowed in comments. Afterall, who is to say your link isn't just your advert your site? If you say hey, this site has some more info on this subject, is that spam? It's only spam if it's my site???

You are a complete hypocrite. Delete your links on your sig, then you might have some credibility. Yeah, you hate comment "spam" but you are spamming me with your signature. Be real.

Appears some are misunderstanding. People can still leave a comment, and can still have their website linked... but G is making a move to curb the nonsense where a blog post about a legal issue is answered by a non-sequitur reply about Viagra or Brittney Spears.

I've seen photography posts get long replies in Russian that include 30-50 links to websites unrelated to the topic... or posts about legal issues draw comments like the following...

There is no question that Askimet currently does a masterful job of recognizing spam comments, and Google can easily employ similar or better technology. I seldom see anything Askimet catches that I would approve if I moderated comments. If someone wants to leave a cogent comment addressing somebody's blog post, great, but if they want to put unrelated cut and paste crap... they're self-serving idiots that dont mind trashing someone elses place up so they don't deserve any consideration to begin with.

The point is what? I respect that you have been here a long time. You've probably helped a lot of people out with helpful advice.

I think you miss the entire thing. Spam is becoming more and more a judgement call isn't it? I can't criticize someone for adding their website if there is a space to do so in the comments of a blog. Do they have to use their name or can they name themselves "furniture"? I have a valid comment, use that name and link to my site, so that is being a spammer? People are really hyper sensitive and throw around the word "spam" without any thought. There is a lot more to it. You have urls in your sig. You are advertising your own interests. Why didn't you just use anchor text as "check out my site". Why? You know why. So, are you being deceitful/spamming because you are creating an unauthentic anchor text url to your own sites? I think you are under yours and most peoples definition of spamming. I'm not beating my chest judging you because you are building a backlink to your own sites. However, unless it's me or somebody else linking to your site, essentially you are spamming. Google looks at or believes that real links are people who say hey, this guy has a great site, here is the link. What Google doesn't want is people saying hey, check out this link, it's my site and I'm selling something. It's all hypocrisy. I'm saying do and say what you want, but don't make it sound like you're above anyone else who posts back to their sites in a different, albeit same manner that you are.

PS: I do agree with Googles article in the sense that as a website owner you should, for the benefit of the internet be responsible with your comment system. Anti spam measures and no follow should be made mandatory across the board. People adapt, and like bees to honey, they can find to openings to spam. Which came first the chicken or the egg? So yes, I agree in part with the ideal Google has about this issue. Ultimately though, Google need to announce that they aren't going to value any links found in comments sections, and that will be the end of the spammers madness.

Your post indicates you still arent understanding what's being planned. This has nothing to do with penalizing a blog for getting legiitimate replies, nor is it a condemnation of those who post legitimate replies even if they have their link in their blog sig.

As for "judgment call" it is easy to spot replies that are intended as an answer to the blog post and which are not. It's easy to do visually, and from my experience it is easily done by the Askimet program. Replies that are not intended to answer the blog post are just garbage to be taken out. It doesnt require a great intellect to tell the two types of replies from each other.

Either way, Google gets to set their own rules, and they dont need our permission to do so. I just happen to think they are making a good move trying to stem the flow of spam on blog comments. They arent trying to end all self promotion, they are trying to end self promotion at someone else's expense. Those that post cut-n-paste generic nonsense on others blogs just for a link are not to be pitied, nor does their loss diminish the web.

ADDED: As for sig links in here...
If you make a post about some topic... and a member replies with a post that explains the issue to you or clarifies something you asked, you don't consider it spam, nor do you care if he does or doesnt have a siglink at the bottom of his post.

If OTOH you make a post in here discussing a change in a Google guideline and someone replies with "Thank you very much I want to buy this product, I appreciate you alerting me to it"... you dont have a lot of question why he posted, and you're pretty sure it wasnt to further the conversation. That's the difference between spam and a reply. Nobody wants their threads or their blog answered by spammers. Just sorta makes you want to twist their head off.
