You see short term ranking has never been a problem. Do angela/paul backlinks, blog commenting or the other common tricks and your ranking will go up but short lived. That's why you see lots of people complaining that their rankings have gone after a while. If you want permanent (well let's just say strong) rankings, then you'll need to get those links which are not easy to get.

I want a website which will actually rank over time and i know these silly practices will not stand the test of time, so i don't even bother...

Comment links haven't been working well for Google for a long time now. As to myself I comment only those blogs which feeds I have in my reader!

Using a contextual partnership is the best way, especially if you have a wordpress blog, it builds backlinks relevant to your keywords!

No, I think Google has everything in its hand. They wouldn't have introduced no follow without a reason. Comment spamming , forum spamming have been such a nuisance that it was inevitable for Google to step in and do some correction by their own. I think its a good leverage of the position google enjoys in mainframe internet. If they start counting nofollow links then its definitely a disaster for all the spammers. Maybe a new relation tag 'spam' would help. But then again there are people who would misuse it for vendetta reasons. Whatever Google does or say, people will be putting faith in it because as it is, ranking matters the most.

Google has ruined the quality of the Internet (Whether willingly or not) by (Directly or indirectly) leading to all these spam and low value sites and all the other crap often done in the name of SEO.

It is their ethical liability as the so called "God" to fix the mess they have created. ;)

P.S My vision for the Internet is one where every website is informative or at least serves a purpose, and you don't have to wade through loads of misleading, false and regurgitated information to get what you want. Call me crazy, but you know that I speaketh the truth.

    I fully agree.

Google is just trying to scare the spammers.

I don't think Google will start penalizing sites for incoming spam links.

Otherwise, people would start spamming blogs with links to competitors' sites and the quantity of spam may actually go up...:D.

The next issue this brings up is why is Google using GWT to show us what may or may not be incoming links they feel may or may not be spammy???

And what is the definition of blog comment spamming??

    What is the baseline???

Is it the quality of the blog comment or apparent lack of quality??

Or is spamming a number factor??

10 blog comments is okay......100 blog comments is not......

All Google is looking to do is just add more propaganda to keep the masses completely confused....

Blurring the line between fact and fiction is all this amounts to.

I'm not sure I would lump comment spam and the Angela/Paul links in the same bad boat.

Would also be interested to know how top commentator links would be viewed.

Its a good news for real SEOs but for spammers they will find the way out :) I think Google should penalize those who are putting 100s of links on blog comments.

The term is so relative.. I don't consider myself "spamming" really, but sure, I'm not commenting out of interest either.

So it means i need to find a way out. Its one of those things i usually do a day. Gathering backlinks through comments.

Any idea on what to do other than that? :(

I'd better go to on-page optimization now.

Hmmm maybe im not being fair either i suppose...

Im so used to running web directories and dealing with the garbage sites and auto submitters that blatantly spam us
that i dont take into consideration another webmaster merely making a 2 sentence comment and linking back to his site
that is relevant to my content (rather then a good comment description 4-6 sentences long) that i consider that as spam
    and dont approve anyone's comments...

Well will be interesting to see what happens in the future concerning comment spam (if anything)

    thx

They are spam links too. Who in their right mind would create hundreds of profile pages just to get a backlink? Of course spammers... and that's what google is cracking down on.

Perhaps if people comment and actually add value to the discussion and instead of putting keywords in the name field, they actually put their name or nick, then it wouldn't be so bad. People who feel the comment was great might in turn visit the web address supplied and you'll be getting some referral traffic from the comments.
