Google is an extremely innovative startup company specializing in search engine technologies. Through its iron grip on the search engine industries, it is slowly permeating towards nearly all aspects of Internet and beyond. Microsoft is the leader of desktop computing OS, the undisputed leader. It has a nearly monopoly of its niche. It is currently fighting a proxy war with Google for the control of the next generation of technology where the browser is the OS and where your word processor, database applications are all online ready for you to use. They are fighting the Internet advertising war prima facie, but their actual intention was above, control of the next generation of OS technology. Who will win at this moment is hard to say. Microsoft is playing catchup, but no one should under estimate the power and determination of Microsoft. Just remember what happened to Netscape......Whether Google will be another Netscape is really hard to say.
I think both the companies are doing well in their domain and I can't clearly differentiate between them.

I don't understand why people always pit Google and Microsoft against each other. They're completely different companeis making different things. Microsoft makes OS and applications. Google is a search engine and specialize in web based applications. Its like comparing a computer to a soccer ball
