Does anyone know why there is such a big discrepancy in link count between those two? Google shows that I have 230 -Top domains that have links to pages on my site ; yet Alexa shows only 43 links.
Can be several, mostly due the interpretation of the quality of the link or because some links are not crawled yet. Anyway I would not be bothered about it, Alexa has no influences on your site rankings so I would not care about it if I were you.
Yet most pay attention to Alexa ranking. “mostly due the interpretation of the quality of the link†- if for example a link with PR5 site, and over 6 mos. old, is showing on G. and not on A. Do G. and A. have different tools to measure the quality of a same link?
That is like asking if Pepsi is making the same cola as Coca-Cola so yeah, they have different standards. And tell me, which value brings Alexa in for your website? Focusing on Alexa rank is like focusing on Google pagerank for high result on SERP.
Alexa has a smaller index database. Strong links are all visible in Alexa. You could use either Alexa link count or Google link count, but comparing Alexa link count with Google link count is meaningless.
I completely agree that Google is more accurate and holds more influence on page ranking so you should not be worrying so much about Alexa links.

All are different, no backlink checker would tell you the same number of links.. so you can use these tools to get overall ideas and nothing more than this.
Both have different parameter to calculate the value of link count and Google doesn't show the all links count. There is only one option that is Google web-master to see all backlinks of your website.
