Not from anything that happened on the 4th, but something happened on October 11th that decimated my traffic. ~9000 pageviews/day down to ~1300. ~700 unique visitors down to like 83. I'm sick of this. I haven't changed my image gallery (stock Coppermine) basically all year, and Google keeps jerking its chain. Jan: 1677 views Feb: 2488 views Mar: 6877 views Apr: 23468 views May: 48438 views Some update on June 5th destroyed that. Went from ~2200 views/day to ~200 basically over night. June: 17531 views I recovered about 50% of what I lost when another change in the first week of July came through, again over night from ~200 views/day to ~1300. Jul: 31347 views And somehow resumed my previous growth pattern, despite being kicked around by Google: Aug: 59366 views Sep: 130737 views But I guess they got bored or something, cause I lost 88% of my traffic Friday evening: Oct 8: 9466 views Oct 9: 10053 views Oct 10: 8996 views Oct 11: 6498 views Oct 12: 1302 views Oct 13: 83 views (so far this morning) No dirty tricks. No frowned upon content. Just a stock Coppermine image gallery. I fail to see how updates aimed at bad sites could do so much damage to legit sites and still do anything close to what was intended. Was on pace for 292,000 views this month, but at this rate it'll be more like 40,000 per month, assuming it doesn't get even worse. Best case scenario I've got to wait another month get back half of what I lost and then spend all of December getting the rest back. If that happens at all.
It's no different than what happened back in June. Identical, if anything. Call it whatever name you want, Google updated something with the algos on Friday night.
Given that Google make ~500 tweaks and changes to the algorithm each yr, of course there was a change on Friday.; probably one today as well.
I think google is updating algo constantly, but it's mostly invisible because it doesn't affect much results
You need to follow its rules to win a SEO battle at Google. So the SEO is not dead. And you can make a good living through the Google.
Personally, I want them to update the algorithm as quickly as possible. They run the penquin algorithm on the whole web, grading sights based on what they consider is bad behavior. Then they wait until the next update to grade you again. Fix the bad behavior and you have to wait for the next update to be reevaluated. The feedback loop is horribly long. It takes months to know if the changes made help or hurt. My hope is that Webmaster Tools will let us know what the complaints are so we can fix them and then resubmit to the algorithm. wiz
Many webmasters facing these problems after Penguin 2.1 update, often some webmasters fail to recognize what bad factors caused their websites to drop in SERP results. Because Google algorithms are very difficult to understand, they are complex in nature, forget about how to recover from update, just concentrate on building good backlinks.
Karen, I can't believe you said that. You should have said "concentrate on building good content." Backlinks are what Google is moving away from, because they can be increased by any number of fraudulent methods. wiz
I think they are both important. I don't think anyone can say which one is more important but Google which won't.
For 8 weeks, i felt like it's the end of the world. Lost almost 80% of the traffic I have been enjoying all these years. In the last 2 weeks, I thought everything is back to normal and again.. BOOM! Let's wait until Christmas day, everything might stabilize.

I believe a lot of people has been affected by such update and it boiled down to one thing, that is quality content.
