Google Toolbar

I have recently heard that using Google Toolbar (mostly for PageRank purpose) may become unsafe, because Google may cross link all the websites that you use to crawl regularly.

Is this true or I just misunderstood something?

If this IS true, then which tool do YOU use to check web site's ranking?

There is an add-on for Firefox that is very powerful. Check it out here

I'm using a FireFox add-on, too. It also give you the Alexa ranking for the visited website.

Personally, I am allergic on any web toolbars. They are good for what? I had Yahoo toolbar accidentally installed few times, its so annoying.

Especially when I see unexperienced internet user that has installed dozen toolbars with function that nobody use, and computer become slow, clogged....

what do you mean by cross linking.

No doubt Yahoo and many other toolbars are just accidently installed and they are for no use! i have now installed Google toolbar only due to its feature of Bookmarks, Autofill, PR, Spell Check.

I mean that Google may connect the dots between all web sites of the same owner, see they are network and then ban them.

The question is theoretic; I am new to SEO, so please forgive me if I sound incompetent.

This is done by looking at the IP address of a set of "shared hosted" web sites. (Subnet Penalty?)

And the only reason you need the Google tool bar is to see what "preceived" page rank a page has. Otherwise you are just sending info to Google.

I don't believe that it does do any harm against your web site or related matters, but I'm not sure - as I do not use any toolbars except my own.

well google toolbar sends tons of info to google, no doubt, but to use the data against a particular individual is not what google does, until and unless you are afraid of something why should you worry, there are so many sites that you surf, if you visit hotmail regularly does it mean that you "own" hotmail so google will go around banning you and hotmail LOL:D
