Google has just announced they are releasing their own operating system next year. Maybe rubbing Bing in their face wasn't Microsoft's SMARTEST move.

Its been known for years that they were going to do this. I dont think MSFT has too much to worry about, but nonetheless it shouldnt be taken lightly.

It's pretty sad. Microsoft is trying to bit Google in the search engine territory and Google is trying to bit Microsoft in the OS territory.

Rumor had it, but no one knew that for sure. As details spark this new operating system sounds pretty amazing to not call it competition. It will be open source and they claim the start up time will be less then a couple seconds. It sounds easier, quicker, and more secure. With all Microsoft's security issues lately, Google may have a chance to cut a chunk of the market share.

i dont think googles os is really gonna do too well. they tried chrome and it didnt really revolutionize anything, everbody i know is still using ie and firefox. and then they tried to make android to defeat the iphone but that never really caught on either

It gotta support for current Win Applications.
Otherwise, many of us will stick to win untill some usefull application comes out for that OS.

You think creating an OS can be compared to a search engine i dont think, new OS arent advanced and for surely cant beat windows when it comes to features and compatibilty... Infact i assume most linux distros would do better than th OS

wow i didnt even think of that. not having enough software is the main reason why i cant stand linux. its annoying on macs too but theres usually an alternative if you search enough. if they want it to be any good they should make it compatible with windows

Like I said, as far as statistics go, Google chrome is only 1.1% behind IE8.
If you think the android was built to defeat the iPhone you have been mistaken completely. Google wanted to create their own mobile platform and it was beyond successful.

It being open source AND it being Google, I assume the OS will be loads of fun for developers and will have plenty of outstanding applications.

actually you are right. android itself is pretty good. the only problem with it is that it needs a phone with good hardware that is available on multiple networks in order to make android more widespread

Again, I never said beat, but I do assume Google has a good chance of grabbing a chunk of Microsoft's market share. Who says I'm comparing anything to a search engine. All I am saying is Microsoft antagonized Google with Bing, so Google has gone on all defense to bring up an amazing operating system.

I assume Google has more future plans for the android, but this thread isn't about Google software it is about their new OS.
