Google to Punish irrelevant links?

    Has anyone seen this article?

    http://www.searchengineguide.com/hedger/003436.html

Search Engine Guide reports it's seeing signs of an oncoming "Google dance" - the introduction of an algorithmic change that could have major effects on who gets listed among the top sites for each keyword.

They point out that among the big losers appear to be those who have had their sites linked far and wide from irrelevant web content. I wonder how this would affect link exchanges and link sales.

hahaha well i hope it isnt true or it will drastically effect alot of sites and refine our link exchanges to only relative sites. I am starting to link with unrelated sites in order to hopefully boost my pr and backlinks.... i have a trouble of moving from pr4 to pr5... it is damn near impossible for me..

I really try just to link to relevant sites only. Irrespective of whether the upcoming Google filter actually comes to pass, I just believe it is a good practice.

links from irrelevant sites won't hurt your rankings, links to irrelevant ones will.

It goes back to the "is Google going to penalize sites because of who links to them" question.

That would be just about the dumbest thing they could do.

I agree also. Having re-read the article, I get the impression that Google won't "punish" sites for unrelated links, however, it will give those sites less weight as a result of those links. I.e., not a punishment, but just giving more relative weight to related links. Which isn't big news, I guess.
