Cnet news is reporting that Google plans to build payment mechanisms in YouTube and has redesigned a part of the YouTube website to add a section for professional content. In a conference call, Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt said,

With respect to how it’ll get monetized, our first priority is on the advertising side. We do expect over time to see micropayments and other forms of subscription models coming as well. We’ll be announcing additional things in that area literally very, very soon. We are making very good progress now with small, medium, and even large-scale video studios

Google has recently signed a partnership with Sony Pictures to show full length movies. The films will be played using the the player from Crackle, Sony Pictures’ own video site. The studio will control advertising for films and Crackle will also get credit for the traffic. Google has also struck deals with CBS, MGM, Lionsgate, Starz and BBC to acquire TV and film content.

The YouTube site will also undergo some design changes. A separate section in YouTube will be given for professional content and made as a marquee product. 2 new tabs will be added, the ‘Shows’ tab to allow browsing of shows by genre, network, title and popularity and the ‘Subscriptions’ tab to grant logged-in users access to fresh content from their favorite creators.

Dont worry youll still get to watch videos and other stuff (just not full length movies)

Google to bring ‘pay-per-view’ to YouTube

Tell me what part there says FREE to view.

I think its a step in the right direction for a video site losing money.

One thing. There might be no restriction for viewing the videos on YouTube doing that will be turning the site to a Junk yard. While I guess those who achieve legit views will be earning money.

Interesting. I'd definitely be interested in paying to watch movies online if they're inexpensive... surprised no where else started up that service yet.

(Yes, I know, torrents - not all of us like to steal)

netflix has been offering this for a while.
except for the starz play ones,it is dvd quality.
    i pay 9 bucks a month.cheaper then PPV,if you watch a lot of movies.

i can't imagine watching a full movie on youtube.
i rather download it from the newsgroups, the dvd rip wont look like a cam job and will download a lot faster.

Nice to see Sony actually trying to work with Youtube rather than working against them.

They will actually just have payment plans for certain videos so that they will get maximum exposure to the YouTube community. Which is good for affiliate promotions :D

I wonder how this will impact regular people who post "how-to" videos.
