Google testing images in main SERPs (like A9)

Ran across this slashdotting today. Has a screen grab of a user doing a search for traktor. In the results three sample images are shown at the top before the main SERs with a link to "search other images for 'traktor'".

I tried and got the regular results. Who's seen it live?

didn't see it live but I'm also not so sure if I'd use that. since google has a seperate image search it doesn't make much sense to integrate 3 pictures into the SERPS.

on the other hand it might be valueable for porn surfers... who knows.

heh - so it's true that technology innovates when there is a need in the porn industry.

Seriously though, I do see the usefulness for an image preview in the top of the SERPs. Searching for products or news, it would be helpful to see that you are searching for the right item.

Also, it would stir things up a little in the SEO world, which would be a good thing.

It would be a nice thing to have when you are searching for a site you found while at work, and you're now at home trying to remember the URL, but you can't so you search Google again for what you were searchign for at work. Well this time you are at your home computer and don't have a convenient Blue or Purple colored title (visited link or not visited) in Google. But you know once you see the layout of the site that this is the site you were looking for.

So in other words, it helps you find forgotten URLs. :p

Forgotten URL's are what Furl and De.lico.us are suppossed to help with. Sadly, I don't use either. I do take my work laptop home with me everday though, so remembering between URLs isn't a difficult task.

There is a Plug-in for Firefox that adds the thumbnail images client-side.
