    this is really annoying..
google has cached a few K pages and serves adsense ok....
but on the other 25K or so...it shows ads for GEM !!
gel gems, gemstones, gem gems ....you name it GEMS.
    This raises the issues...
    1) where did that come from..and why...the word gem is not anchored in any links or does it come from my profile????
    2) no offense but good job my handle isnt something like "Disgust"...or worse..or rude even
    3) maybe my handle should be mesolitisodiumate,,or whatever that super high paying Adword is !

any ideas...as i am p****d with 25k of GEMS (one is enuff)

    Well, that is strange indeed.

The first few I checked were fine but this page
    http://www.justoneuk.com/NorthWest/Chester/Chester-Computer-Services-Upgrades-repairs.htm
indeed shows gemgel and gem ads.

I can't see the word gem on there anywhere.

Do you use that nick on other forums?

That's quite a mystery actually how they decide on doing that, especially since you don't use ure pub-id on DP's ads. Yuo can e-mail/pm Shawn and have your Nick changed to something better but that still wouldn't solve the mystery.

It looks indeed like they are linking up your sig's surrounding text with your nick being a header/bold tag with the anchor target page in your sig. Maybe remove the sig links as well?

Pretty f*cked up if yo ask me. Have you contacted Google?

    Hi mate,

I got Gem as well on 1 of your pages and I did a quick scan on your page source and there were no occurances at all for the word gem. Strange indeed!!

Have you signed up to the revenue sharing on this forum? It might be getting confused with adverts from this site?

tony bug...lol he's been here 5 min and he has his own catchphrase :D

<<I got Gem as well on 1 of your pages>>
i get it on about 20,000...it has something to do with those pages not being cached....but adsense is still served to those pages...and it seems to take the G E M out of my name and post contents ...instead of reading the page...thats the only way i can explain it.

i guess it has found something unique with adsense that i have NEVER heard of....

That whatever name you use to post...and whatever the content of your post...be careful. Because if you have so many pages on your site that google hasnt cached them, all it will take information from any posts that link to your site, and serve you up non appropriate Ads

    I hereby name this phenomenon THE GEM EFFECT™ ©29 NOV,2004 J1UK :)

We wouldn't want to mention mesathelioma too many times then would we? mesathelioma would almost certainly change the keywords appearing on the adverts of yours.

I think GEM Effect is predominant only in vbulletin. Because the name opens a link and there you can see many time same name repeated. But in other forum s/w, there wont be this much "keyword density".

Well I'm gonna try on IPB NEway. ;)

Full credits to you! It is very strange, quite unbelievable yet an existing phenomenon.

Maybe this proves the power of surrounding text around the links. It has to! It must be taken into account as far as assigning a 'theme' or topic to the targeted site. You say Google hadn't spidered it yet but they did do an ill-fated attempt to make something of it's topic and tried to serve 'relevant' ads. They couldn't make anything of the 8 word anchor text in the links so they applied some words they found around it, which happened to be GEM. Best find in a long long time!

THE GEM EFFECT / SURROUNDING TEXT PROOF

Edit: You know what, maybe not. I forgot about the drop down links. T...o...n...y....

What do you mean Foxy? He doesn't have any links from his site to the DP forums. Only some VB menu links which used to have GEM as the anchor text pointing to his site. But his phenomenon shows that the anchor text is enough for G to decide on the AdSense theme.
