Last month, data began to circulate that Google quantum computer Sycamore had achieved what is known as "quantum supremacy", quantum superiority, and today Google released a report confirming this.

In the "Quantum supremacy using a programmable superconducting processor" report, Google writes that it used the 53-qbits Sycamore to perform a very complex calculation in just 200 seconds, a calculation that it says would take around 10,000 years to calculate the world's fastest supercomputer Summit.

However, Google states that even though it is now considered to have achieved quantum superiority, in its current embodiment, Sycamore is not practical to use for general complex calculations. Sycamore is currently designed to prove that quantum superiority can be achieved, but it will take a bunch of years before quantum computers will perhaps start to be used practically.

IBM had previously criticized Google's claims of quantum superiority. According to researchers at IBM, the supercomputer Summit could perform the complex calculation that Google says would take ten years in just a few days if you entered the data used for the calculation in a different way.

Whatever the case may be, Google's progress on the quantum computer front should at least count as some kind of milestone, and I guess we have to wait a while to actually decide how big this progress should actually be. Google CEO Sundar Pichai compares it all in an interview with MIT Technology News with the brothers Wright's first flight, which lasted for twelve seconds, an important milestone for the aerospace industry, but nothing that changed how we traveled around the world until many years later.

Below is a feature from Google demonstrating Sycamore's quantum superiority quantum computer.

Is it just me or is things in the world getting exiting ?
