They are keeping the API for the time being:
    http://google-code-updates.blogspot.com/2006/12/beyond-soap-search-api.html

However, new SOAP API keys won't be issued. Also, there are numerous reports that the SOAP service has been very flaky - just look at the number of complaints in this forum...

There are a lot of people missing the big picture with this move from Google.... there is now no legal method of obtaining keyword ranking using any automated / server-side methods. As far as I know, the SOAP API was the only way.
The suggestion of AJAX as a fallback is a joke and screen scraping is in breach of the google terms of use.
Tools such as http://evilapi.com could possibly result in your IP address being eventually blocked by Google because its actually screen scraping.
As far as I can tell, Google will only allow you to check your keyword ranking using carbon-based methods.
i.e. typing in your keywords and hitting that big old search button.

Its only new keys that are not being issued. Old keys still work fine.

But this does mean that new users (like me) won't be able to use the tools, right?

scubita, I'm very sorry for you and all the rest who missed to obtain their API but your post made me remember of one line that goes something like this:

    Procrastinators UNITE... tomorrow
    ;)

Didn't mean to be offending here really because I get caught up in procrastinating sometimes as well... just thought I could lighten you up a little bit with some humor... (did it work?)

It's pretty surprising that Google hasn't done more to have public API's. I mean, Yahoo by comparison is WAY more open than Google. It's just sad.

I think it is just a matter of time they will shutdown this service.
There is a lot of desktop application and web services which use this API,this move from Google is just like saying their developers screw you.
In the future they will think twice before touching anything from Google.

is it even working for anyone? It just shows me a 0, even if I update it and I tested adding search for "google" and domain: "google.com" and it still showed 0. It's definately broken or dead, and I guess there weren't may people using this tool on DP.

Shawn has not made any change to keyword tracker for new users .. {those who have not API Key} .. I think Shawn is pretty much satisfied with user base it already keeps ;)
