It is a good idea to have compressed .gz,.ror and uncompressed sitemaps. That way you give SE's a choice on what they prefer. Their is a multitude of sitemaps you can use one can be for video, one for images, mobile, geo, news and code search. They each have their own purpose besides the standard sitemap. You can read more at Google Webmaster Central for specialized sitemaps.
Sites with multiple sitemaps can make a index file and mention in the robots.txt like this sitemap : http://www.xxxxxx.com/sitemap-index.xml Be sure to gzip them to avoid bandwidth hogging
GSiteCrawler is my favorite, give it a try. It is free and crawls all of your pages, creates xml and gzip versions along with sitemap index files for large sitemaps. Simply the best
A website's ranking with the search engines is one of the most important elements of business success. It is important to get your pages indexed so that you can show up in the results of searches done using the search engines. Indexing is a process by which search engines, such as Google, send their robots to process and categorize the pages on your website. Some search engines might find it difficult to find all of your pages, especially the pages that are deeply buried.
recent posts and some of my old posts are not showing my google sitemap. In fact only 7 posts out of total 26 posts are showing in google sitemap whether I set change frequency daily, weekly, monthly or yearly
Thanks a lot for all the great advice provided in this thread . I read over your that someone wanted to know whether it was possible for the sitemap to be automatically be updated every time a new link has been added . If you have a blog of WordPress, then this is possible . This is a special plug-in that is available that allows you to perform this functionality.

There are plenty of sitemap generating tools available. Better if you try to get a script installed on your site which works as a CRON JOB.
