Google Site Performance Tools - SEO Question

Has anyone noticed if Google gives sites better rankings if it loads quicker?

It seems that Google want's us to install tools to make the web faster and I was wondering if maybe Google would give the fast loading sites some benefits in rankings.

Or would this just result in an over-optimization penalty if I start messing around optimizing my site even more?

I know Google is all about optimization and simplicity as is evident through their homepage and their products. I am sure if your website is not bloated with lots of images, flash, and unnecessary code then Google will favor it over other ones. I have never heard of Google actually ranking an optimized (From a code point of view) website.

Speed will not effect rank, it will effect human visitors.

    My site is at: http://www.lolroulette.com/

It says my site loads at an average of 2.5 seconds and the chart in my Webmaster Tools shows the line moving between the red and the green (slow and fast). It seems that my Wordpress blog seems to load up the slowest. I'm not sure if this is really an issue.

Ideally, I would like my entire site to appear in the green with every page loading in less than 1.5 seconds. I'm not sure if Google would give me better rankings if I could do this or not.

Also, Google mentions using something called "gzip" to compress my files. Does anyone know about this or if this is something easy and practical to work with?

Yes!! tht's not google point of view rather it's user if user opens the website and it opens slowly tht's too annoying for him making him close the website and luk out for new one causing high bounce rate and less traffic 1 of the criteria of google SERP rank.

right now speed does not have anything to do with your website rankings, but may become one of factors that determines a website rankings in the coming days
