google site map XML vs. html

    Here is my site map

    is it a problem that it is not an XML file, and instead its html? it looks the same as other site maps. i don't know anything about XML coding, however have noticed that i do not have any of the following tags?

    <sitemap>
    <loc>
    <lastmod>

    how important is it for to have an XML site map vs html?

    that is a huge help! thanks very much. i am always amazed at how many free webmaster tools there are out there.

    but are you aware of any differnce between the XML site map and HTML site map from google?

    Sorry mate can't answer that one. I just use XML because that's often what the format they keep taking about when they speak of sitemaps.

    Hope someone else can answer that one.

    Can I ask, do sitemaps really help to get a site indexed in google? I've got a small blog 100 pages or so, mostly articles I had written for me.

    The site is new, would a sitemap cause all the pages to be indexed or do the normal rules of sandbox, backlinks etc still apply.

    All of the rules still apply. The sitemap only makes it easier for you to tell Google what pages are currently on your site. Nothing more.

    I may be wrong but after putting a sitemap on my main site: Telephone Antiques and registering it with Google sitemap page my pages appear to be updated in Google's cache more frequently. Which is an advantage to me because I change my homepage to get the best key words regularly. Has anyone else noticed this, or is it just a coincidence ? :)

    Have a HTML sitemap for your users
    (perhaps even containing appropriate
    anchor text and whatnot) and XML for Google.

    Many sitemap generators fail to calculate
    reasonble <priority> tags etc. in Google sitemaps...
    But truth to be told, it hasn't really been
    proven what Google uses that for so... :)
