Google showing wrong URL when searching for my site

When searching for my site in google, the main result shows as "mysite.com/forum" instead of just "mysite.com".

I suppose this is because I have set the URL to redirect straight to "mysite.com/forum" (there is nothing at "mysite.com" other than a php 301 redirect to my forum)

How can I get google to display the main result for my site as "mysite.com" only ? (and no, I cant simply move my forum to the root directory, I have to keep everything where it is).

I have seen that other forums have their site displayed as "mysite.com" in the results even though they redirect straight to /forums, so this cant be to hard to achive.

Should i just create plently of backlinks to "mysite.com"? or would this do nothing but bump up the existing "mysite.com/forum" in the results?

    Thanks
