I have an ecommerce site which has enjoyed 2nd page Google ranking for a keyword that now is not shown in the top 100 pages. The strange thing is this: "widget" does not appear on the first 100 pages of Google results...it previously was second page for several years. "widget for sale" and "buy widget" remain on the first page of Google results as before. Why would the "widget" kw take a plunge and not the longer widget keywords? These new results started 3 months ago. First it dropped to page eight, then it dropped off the first 100 pages. This is a niche product too. The page is indexed; the one word kw and the 2-3 word kws all go to the same (page) url. The only possible reason I can think of is that I placed about 2 dozen text links in different Myspace profiles comments area using the "single word" keyword. Could those links have caused such a drop just for those keywords in Google SERPS? I have never read anything to indicate that text links in Myspace comments could be bad.
