How often google updates their SERP. What is their methodology for SERP and how often it updates their backlinks?

It depends on a number of factors. Google has a lot to take into consideration. The listing change very regularly, they update them multiple times a day to include breaking news so on. However other factors are worked into the index at a slower rate. A lot of stuff needs to be found before it can actually be worked into the next update, so things like backlinks, deep pages on website that don't change often could takes weeks or month for the google bot to get around to and find. These would be filter into the generic ranking in fairly frequently say two or three time a week. Different updates can been seen on different data center at the different time (however this is less obvious now).

Then their is page rank, google seem to be deliberately not putting any effort into making this current. I expect it to usually be around 4 month out of date.

Hope this helps, most of this is based on obversation of the index over the last couple of year so it might be wrong.

SERP update depends on the site in question. Once a page has been crawled it is usually a matter of 1 minute to 24 hours before the index is updated.

Hi, the google´s algorithm is top secret, and some sites are crawled hundreds or thousands times a day.

SERPS updates happen a few times per day. The more PR your site has the quickly new content is indexed and the faster Google will reflect this in its SERPS rankings
