After all my moaning and complaining, I can just see after spending the past few days listing again on ebay (ugh!) the site will shoot back to page 1 & we'll get hundreds of orders from ebay and the website all at the same time, and have no time to make them all. (wishful thinking, huh?)

Here's a good email I got today about the update:
Seems in with what others are saying in the thread and is probably the most sane approach to take right now.

Oh come on, quit spewing useless and false info people!!!

PR DOES NOT AFFECT YOUR RANKINGS. IT ALSO DOES NOT EFFECT ADSENSE EARNINGS!

The only thing PR does it gives people some inner satisfaction and solitude in knowing that their site is at least being picked up by Google.

Google has already confirmed many moons ago and time and time again in various conferences that PR means nothing other than to give you a Google fetish.

I have a website listed at #1 in Google that I just launched a few months ago and it has a PR4. It is blowing all other sites for my topic out of the water. We talking yahoo's directory, DMOZ, BBC, About.com, etc. These sites have like PR7+.

Can you talk about the competitiveness of the keywords it ranks #1 for? And why you think you were able to avoid the new site penalty for competitive phrases?

What penalty for competitive phrases ??

Here's what I see on one of my sites (where I track about 50 or so keywords):

    position number of results
       654 1,250,000
       800 990,000
       65 1,300,000
       127 2,500,000
       32 42,000,000
       45 23,000,000
       700 22,000,000
       5 1,500,000
       7 2,750,000
       1 750,000

    Code (markup):
This is only posted to show that I have weird rankings for exactly the same site. The 22 & 23 million results keywords are actually very very similar. The one I rank reasonably for is 2 words, the one I tanked for is 3 words.

Roll on a few weeks time when this update is complete and we can actually try and work out wtf happened.

edit: one day I'll work out how to align columns in VB.

    >>What penalty for competitive phrases ??

Well, you know... the sandbox. I don't like that term since it is really just a filter/penalty for new sites and competitive phrases. Pick your keywords correctly and you can still get ranked.

    >>Here's what I see on one of my sites (where I track about 50 or so keywords):

No one can tell what is going on right now, eh? I was in the top 3 to 5 for a phrase with 48 million results, but it really isn't that competitive when not many people care what they rank for it. I was most curious on how competitive the terms were that he was ranking for with such a new site.

    >>This is only posted to show that I have weird rankings for exactly the same site. The 22 & 23 million results keywords are actually very very similar. The one I rank reasonably for is 2 words, the one I tanked for is 3 words.

Hahah yea I know how that goes. One of my sites targets 5 phrases.. like "widget manufacturing" "widget production" "widget help" .... only 1 of the 5 phrases has tanked.. other 4 are still holding within a few spots of pre-update. The 1 that tanked is not special or any tougher than any of the others. It makes no sense and I've given up on it until things are settled. I still find it hard to believe certain pages dropped 600 slots of relevance but other pages from the same site are fine.

    Lawrence :

The flux will not stop these days, and it's very fluid. Please expect more and more changes, and at the final movement, please do not expect the same results and facts as before this octomber SERP drop event.

The old algorithms will not be dropped, but little changes that are being made, can have a very large effect on your new situation, after the flux is finished

Seems I read in the past somewhere... people speculating about why the updates don't go over a certain number of days. Something about the limitations of the equipment, algo... I don't remember exactly, but the time period, perhaps a limit, was getting close...

I wonder if, in the competition to see who could index more pages, Google did not bite off more than it could chew, and had to let this update go off without the calculations completely done. Sure would explain the sites you link TO ranking for keywords for awhile, odd PR on internal pages, and the small gains I am seeing since the PR update among other things.

Is that what you were looking for, J? :D

I've been saving that one.

I have seen a little good movement too. Allinanchor almost seems to be the deciding factor in rankings now - used to be it mattered, but overall links mattered as well. I also think that internal links have completely been taken out of the equation. Possibly in relation to a "link exchange penalty". It could very well happen, too.

Since all pages in your site link together, if google implemented an overly harsh link exchange penalty (which they did, my pr5 site that had 1000 link exchanges went to pr 1 without loss of any of those links). if pages on your site link together, they could be seen as "reciprocal links" and thus not count for the other pages.

Think thats possible? A half-thought out link exchange "penalty" or more correctly, link exchange "discount" of those links?

Jumping into this thread a little late, but just checked and 4 of my sites that had ok rankings (<100) and PR3 or PR4 are no longer ranked and now showing PR0. And also showing 0 backlinks even though I have several hundred backlinks on each, almost 1,000 on one of them.

But one other site jumped from PR3 to PR7 and from less than 100 backlinks to over 500.

WTF? Is this just a bunch of transient noise?
