I'm just going to toss this out there.
Noticed that all of the newer sites (that I've checked so far) in the results will not show #1 for "domain .com" on the majority of datacenters.

Here is what I am seeing in my financial related niche. For the last six months, I was in the top 10 on at least 10 out of 15 keywords that I compete and since September 23, I am no where to be found for any of my keywords. The only way my site is found is if I search for the exact 3 keywords that appear in my domain name which are basically never searched by anyone.

My site still has page rank and is indexed in google, it just disappeared from the search results for my major keywords. My linking strategy over the last year was mainly in directories (one way), reciprocal linking and articles. I varied anchored text and descriptions, although my descriptions were duplicated quite a bit. In my descriptions I have been trying to use semantics. Here are some observations:

    1. Sites linking to my site are sometimes positioned in the top 10 or 20 as a result of my link on the site.

    2. The results are changing daily and some other top sites have moved from position 4 to position 13.

    3. Major online name brand sites are getting top positions.

    4. There is still some spam mixed in with the results and even portals and blog spam from comment sections.

    5. The number one site in my niche which has been at #1 for at least the last year totally disappeared out of top 1000 yesterday. This site heavily uses one way links and very few reciprocal links. All links have varying anchored text and descriptions.

    Anyone else seeing similar observations?

Yesterday I was seeing the different results on 5 of 45 McDar data centers. Today I'm seeing it on thirteen. Gosh I hope it doesn't roll out to all of them.

    EDIT

45 minutes later I'm back in ALL the DC's. There's some serious flux going on here.

I realized that the world doesn't revolve around my little corner of the web (sometimes we forget) but to me this doesn't look like typical everflux. What do you think is going on here minstrel? I would be interested in knowing what your take is on all this. Do you think this will become typical behavior?

Why does it appear that some sites are wall flowers and others are cutting a rug?

I haven't seen anything at all out of the ordinary. A little wobbling in # pages indexed. Backlinks stable. Public PR stable. Google rankings stable. Nothing unusual.

I hear people saying they are seeing this and that but even those reports describe minor ups and downs as far as I can see -- one position up, one position down. In the world of search engines, that's a normal day.

How is jumping in and out of result sets in various datacentres just "minor ups and downs" ? I'm not going to argue this with you because you've certainly made up your mind, but there was a lot of flux between DCs going on in the past week. McDar even showed it to you graphically. Stable sites were dropping out of the results completely on certain DCs. It was not day to day ups and downs.

I'm not going to argue the point any more either. But whatever you think is happening will have to explain why a few people are seeing something that a lot of people are not seeing.

Maybe it has something to do with redirects, or the sandbox, or devaluing directory links, or god knows what... I don't know because I simply don't see anything I wouldn't be seeing any other day of the week.

Or maybe it's nothing at all...

I though Google didn't dance these days. Or at least not really. Just jigged a little on a more or less continuous basis.

Google's Matt Cutts has just been talking about it in his latest blog on changing hosts (www.mattcutts.com/blog/moving-to-a-new-web-host/)
