Looking at the Pre-Update Google, many times for non-competitive terms, all it takes is a single link into an inner page to rank very well for the search term.

Using tools like wordtracker, or your own research, you can often find phrases that are very easy to rank for, and will give you great conversions from visitors searching for those terms. Many times you can find terms that convert 10 times or more than major key phrases. You can usually find phrases with decent traffic as well that are much easier to rank for than major terms.

A basic rule that I follow, is the more searches, the harder it is to rank for, and the lower the overall conversion rate from visitors that searched for that specific term.

I consider SEO a long term commitment, and if you can rank well for lesser terms before you go after the big terms, you can actually start pulling in some revenue with very little work compared to highly competitive terms. Over time the higher link popularity of the inner pages, that link back to your homepage, make it easier for the homepage to rank for the more competitive terms that you are targeting. Linking to the inner pages, augments the overall effectiveness of your SEO for the major terms, and can actually shorten the time it takes to rank for the harder terms.

So, in essence I think that inner pages should definitely be taken into consideration, as they can make your SEO efforts much easier, and provide revenue from the get go. Don't neglect getting links to the homepage, but don't make it your only focus.

This method has always, until now, proved to be very effective for me. Make your website worthy of people to link to, and the whole process can almost run itself.

I'd need some beer to sit and wade through all 500+ posts that's for sure. For once though this is a long thread I'm keeping up with - incase someone comes up with a tit bit that looks more plausible than Caryls.

I'll have to report that Google seems to be getting it right for me this time, it's the best traffic increase I've seen since Feb 3, '05.

But since these things always seem to be a zero-sum game some are hurting, my sympathies--I've been there too.

I don't track individual keywords, I use too many. I'm just seeing an across the board increase of about 25%. Sure hope it sticks around for a while.

For all these years I thought the phrase was 'tit bit' now I find out it's 'tid bit' - learn something new everyday.

I love when searching for things about Google illustrates the problems with Google.

A few weeks ago there was the incident with Matt Cutt's blog where the blackhat SEO group was outranking him for any phrase you'd type in from the blog because they were beating him with Google's own dupe content penalty.

Now, if you do a search for Matt Cutts .. no quotes.. an old .edu page that hasn't been updated in 14 months outranks his hugely popular blog.

That does seem to support fryman's theory about domain age.

Well obviously the .edu page is more relevant than his own blog homepage. Its a .edu isn't it??

i gotta git me summa those! :D

but seriously, it's probably nothing to do with the tld, rather the high authority of the university website - loads and loads of one way inbound links from students and alumni - that boosted that page

What interesting is the ranking pulse has not had any type of unusual spike.

So maybe its just a few people screaming loudly that are affected? hrmmm

it seems the keywords tracked by ranking pulse are dominated by the long-established major corporations anyway. for example, "travel". the top ten is stacked with major players.

but few people search like that. most would search for "[name of country] travel" or "travel guide [name of city]" or something else more specific than just "travel". and that's where you had the upheaval, with devastation stretching far and wide.
