Never thought I'd see a day when I thought Y was more relevant the G, but today it certainly is for some terms.
Hopefully things will return to something approaching normality soon - and I don't just mean my sites. I've never liked using yahoo - don't know why but I haven't - and I wouldn't like to start now.

Well for what it's worth the people who have not been affected are now preaching how their SEO is the one true way and all others will burn in hell for doing anything that they say is against Googles' clearly accepted and understood practices.

Here's an amusing thread from Seochat http://forums.seochat.com/t54522/s.html about someone whose sites were not penalised and is now telling us all how to suck eggs. Funnily enough the 'all powerful and one true SEO strategy' they profess sounds remarkably like some mentioned in this thread whose sites have been smashed.

The upshot of this is that it's all FUD and conjecture at this point. Let's wait and see what happens.

Half the people on SEO boards would be homeless if they had to rely on their sites income, take everthing with a grain of salt, unless someone shows proof , actually links to serps that shows what they say true.

Generally when there is a google dance, I get a few days of a gazillion google bots roaming my site. I have yet to see them show up other than the occasional 1-2, but I did notice a drop of over 30 positions in just about every keyword phrase that I track here at digitalpoint today.

I am getting good crawls, a little less today than yesterday, probably closer to normal of late.

It occured to me that this post by me:
    http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showpost.php?p=373402&postcount=239
points out that I am ranking for 'webmaster resources directory' with the last internal link on my home page, the last crawlable on the Webmaster Resources Directory main page, and the last internal on every category page of it.

Obviously the anchor credit is being attributed to the wrong page - the last one it possibly could.

Is this just my site? Anybody got a weird result similar? http://www.netmidwest.com/cat23-2.html should not rank above the main page for the phrase alone. Maybe with an extra keyword...

It still seems that longevity is a factor in all of this. All of the sites who are ahead of me have sites that wree built a long time ago. There are no fly-by-nights in the top results.

But what worries me more is that most of my pages have completely disappeared. Nothing has changed since this morning and I guess I will give it some time before figuring out what to do next.

What can I do next anyways??

Well, the amount of change in my rankings tells me that something major is happening. the least change I had from a keyword phrase is 37, and some changed more than 100 positions, all since yesterday's check.

Its a dance, or something temporary is happening due to my vBulletin upgrade from 3.07 to 3.5.0.

This simply isn't normal change, at least for me.

I don't buy that at all, my main site being nocked out now was regd and has been active since 98.

Some sub sites though however which are not duplicates so don't shout it are outranking this long standing site though which is kind of funny as they should never outrank it, guess we'll have to see. Maybe some of the old dogs are being put down? Sure hope that's not the case, but we'll have to wait and see.

---edit i've had this happen in the past 'sites of my own that should not outrank another, out rank' it however was always temporary :)

I don't feel age is a factor - I got hit, netmidwest has been up since August of '01... I see a few in my industry that have not been that are younger. I am going by domain age, though. I have tweaked constantly at design, kw targeting, text and internal structure.

Stick it out, don't make any knee-jerk reactions... keep your site stable. Chances are, you will be happier and emerge more confident no matter what your serps look like next week.

My home page was crawled today for the first time in 12 days. It's normally almost daily.

The 20 keyword phrases I track on DP have shown minimal change. During all this long thread, I've seen almost no puzzling ups or downs in my Google numbers (usually 9 KW phrases on Google's front page). It has been quite stable, except for the puzzling 12-day gap in crawling the home page.

Could the lack of wide swings be because mine is a noncommercial site?

Not all sites are currently being effected, different industries don't appear to be where others are, so yes it could be or yours might be one of the lucky ones ;)
