Google searches vs Google exact results

What is a good number guideline to follow between Google searches for a keyword and exact Google results for that keyword? The goal being to find the most profitable and rankable keywords. I normally work on 3000 searches and less exact results, do you think it should be more or less this number? These days with so much competition, should we be aiming for these small niches, or be more aggressive and looking for larger niches with more competition?

depends on the keyword price. If its a high paying niche I wouldnt mind going down to even 1000

I would look at the advertiser competition in the Google External Keywords Tool. There are some very expensive low volume keywords.

I look for exact keywords that have more that 1000 search per day and it works well for my PPC campaign.
