does one usually perform better than the other?

is there any way to test how well the search network performs without affecting the performance of regular search?

Performance depends on the site and in your stats they are separated.

Google wont let you select the network without google network. There is a way to do it though. I cant remember how but I know it is in Perry Marshalls book.
