    LOL that's too funny.

I've been using Gumtree for a long time and it works well for less competitive phrases. I suppose it was only a matter of time before the masses discovered it and spammed it into oblivion. ;)

I heard one of my friends that one of his sites is penalized by Google in the SERPS and he noticed that it is a -50 penalty.

Is this happening to you also just like my friend? I don't understand much about -50, but what is this all about?:D

There is no such thing as the minus 50 penalty but in fact its a minus 30 penalty which is a kind of algorithm set by Google for webmasters who are using black hat and unethical techniques of SEO. There is no definite comment by any Google tech regarding this but I think it can be sorted out if you fix the wrong things.

All the discussions of Google -30/-50/-250 penalty (or whatever number you prefer) are fairly laughable. As soon as people start giving examples, you see that the reported drops in ranking are "about 30" or "about 50" or "about 250".

First, why on earth would Google have hard-wired numbers like this in its alogorithms? It goes against all the principles it uses.

Second, if the reported drops are always "roughly this" and "roughly that", where's the actual evidence for a specific -30/-50/-250 penalty?

I suspect, like the sandbox, this is another convenient way-out for webmasters who haven't achieved the rankings they hoped for, or who have recently seen a drop in rankings.

Search ranking calculations are highly complex, the rankings change from day to day, and it's not always easy to get good rankings for your chosen terms. Get used to it!

Even if one searches for not that competitive word like interview questions and answers. You will see out of top ten results five of the websites are just selling job interview materials or providing resume writing services etc .
When I search for something in google, google should not by default assume that I want to buy an ebook or some service from internet and show me a book from amazon.

Going back to the original thread on the fiesta card parts search, although it's always nice to have a variety of pages and sites in the results, I think some fundamental questions are being overlooked.

When a search "ford fiesta car parts bournemouth" is entered, are the results relevant to that search query or not? And how relevant are the first batch of results?

The top 3 google uk search results are highly relevant to the query (i.e. people located in bournemouth selling ford fiestas and fiesta car parts) - and the bournemouth.gumtree.com site is shown as having more relevant results available.

True, as you go down there are a lot of gumtree results, but these appear to be highly relevant to "car parts" and "ford fiesta" - the only issue is that the bouremouth part is not as strongly relevant as it could be. Fair enough, but these aren't the top results, and this is one term out of 5.

Let's compare with Yahoo.co.uk - the top 3 results are not at all relevant to the query term! The fourth one (bournemotuh.gumtree) is - but later ones appear not relevant either.

If you try to do an onjective comparison of the two, it seems pretty clear that the Google results are much more relevant.

Are there any other sites relevant to the query that aren't found high up in the results for either search engine? If not, then what's the problem?

and the funniest bit is that the advertisers of the Fiesta car parts have completely missed the opportunity of boosting their own sites rankings (by including a link). Doh !!!

you linked to the 4th page. What's more interesting is the 1st page. Exclusively gumtree. Although, how many pages are targeted towards "ford fiesta car parts bournemouth" better than this one? It has all the words in the title. If there is, i'd like to see it.
