Google search results change from #1, to not listed, then back again...daily!

I have been following the forum for some time and trying to gleen as much as possible regarding SEO. I've been tracking my search results for different keywords and phrases and most vary position a little bit, but 4 or 5 of my most important keyphrases have started to disappear off the search results every other day or so then return to their previous position the next day. Some of these keyphrases I rank #1 then the next day completely gone! Has anyone heard of this happening or have a theory of what could be happening?
    Thanks-

Starting on Dec 20 one of my sites has cycled about 3 times. Last week the site had 108 pages indexed by google (using Webmasters Tools to verify) - fell to only 28 pages indexed on last Saturday (Don't know where the other 80 went) and this AM was back to 98 pages indexed. In the meantime I did not modify any pages. Google robot visited on Feb 8 and Feb 17. we will wait and see with next visit.

This is typical Google activity. :) So it's Ok to relax. :)

There are two reasons this happens:

    1. Your site is decreasing in importance
    2. Your site is rather new, and Google is still working to index it permanently.

That happened to my site too when it was new. It was between 2nd-3rd page on some really high traffic keywords. But after 1 month it's gone. It's nowhere to be found. Then after a year, it's back on google but on the 100th page? :)

Sorry folks, it's not just new sites.

Mine's 11 years old, goes up and down in google like a yo-yo. Sometimes I stay up or down for a day, sometimes a week, sometime months. Serps go from a number 2 ranking to the 50's to 900+ and back, up and down and up and down, been doing this since big daddy.

Thanx for the insight. Still sucks but at least it's across the board. Just seems ridiculous that you can come up as the #1 most relevant search return then the next day not even exist! I guess whatever mood Google is in on a certain day determines if you are it's friend or not.:)
