This really makes me mad. Yesterday I downloaded an update to firefox for the yahoo toolbar. These spammers hijacked the main ff google search box, and changed it to yahoo search. So now my browser has 2 yahoo search boxes and no google. I uninstalled the yahoo toolbar, but my ff search is still hacked and set to yahoo. Does anyone know how to get google search back in my browser? Thanks, Corina
I tried reinstalling firefox completely but it did not work. That's a good suggestion. Thanks Roman. Sys restore is an option, but believe it or not, I'm actually more comfortable regedit-ing the key manually **for this 1 item** (If it's only one line) rather than restoring my entire system. Does anyone know the registry value for google search/any other options?
I posted the question on mozilla, and just received this answer. All is well. Though, I don't blame a company for "encouraging" people to use their product, I find it totally offensive when someone forces my homepage or browser settings by default. I'm assuming the new license in the yahoo toolbar said that I was granting them permission to change the search box to yahoo, I can't help but think that most people get annoyed when this happens. The answer to me is simple, uninstall the product. Leave my settings alone. ----------------------------------------------- To restore Google to the default Firefox settings: Enter about:config in the Location bar and reset (right-click, press Reset) the following entries: browser.search.defaultenginename browser.search.defaulturl keyword.URL keyword.enabled If Status is default or Reset is grayed out, the value is set to default.
I hate yahoo for all the crap it throws on your computer. I use system restore and just go to the day before, works well, and you can always undo the restore as well. Glad to hear you fixed it.
yahoo is like a spyware company. they put so much JUNK on your PC when installing something, it's enough to kill a low end PC. Totally uncalled for and annoying.
It's total over-kill. If your product is good, people will use it. period. Sneaking changes like that on my pc, without asking me first w/ a check box is spam, regardless of how they covered their a** with legalese. The good news is when I uninstalled the toolbar they asked for feedback. I was feeling pretty bitchy at the time and gave then an earfull about the changes they made to my system.
Only thing I install from Yahoo is their messenger. They try to impose all sort of useless stuff when you install the messenger. But if you take care and untick all unwanted boxes you will be spared
