I just came across the "Google Search-Based keyword tool"

    http://www.google.com/sktool/#

Supposedly... it tells you how many monthly searches there are for a particular keyword

For instance "dog food" says 23,000 a month search that (i would assume it would be WAY higher than that)

AND THEN, THERE IS THE "ADWORDS TOOL":

    https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

It says "dog food" comes up 2,740,000 a month......

    Which one is accurate?

    Are both junk???

Yeah it seems to be non supported, non maintained - perhaps abandoned  maybe.

who knows I think the best you can do is aggregate googles insight for search - adwords tool - sktool - keyword tracker - keyword discovery, etc to get a ball park figure about traffic density for any keyword.
