Google Search (901 - 998 of about 10,400)

    Hi,

My site has been ranked by google for quite a while, and while we have a bit of content, we do have about 1160 pages - which is what Yahoo says. Or alltheweb.com has us with 1130..

Google, on the other hand, tells me that I have 10,400 results. Which, though exciting to think that there is a content writing fairy, is wrong and when I try to see what the other 9k pages are, I get blocked after 998.

Why does this happen? Why are google lieing?

"Do No Evil"??? Trust me, when my CFO and COO think that we have a huge site, but can only see the same old 1000 pages, and complain that we are not the 1st on Google - then it feels like Google is doing evil to me.

Google only shows the first 1000 results.

If you are searching for site:www.yoursite.com and getting 10,000 pages then this is how many pages google has found.

Post your url as this sort of thing can mean serious trouble for your site as the pages could be listed as duplicates of the actual pages.

For example mysite.com/page.php is different to www.mysite.com/page.php

so you're saying that the links themselves, rather than the physical file names are what google has found...

I guess that makes sense, what with your other topic about Matt Cutts' 3rd and 4th result from the same page. (missing / )

    Cheers

Google will have found 10,000 urls/pages from your site if thats what its saying.

The problem might be that google can't recognise that some pages are the same page with slightly different url's.

Also remember that this is just an estimate and not an exact number.
Same goes for keyword searches when it says Results 1 - 10 of about xxx,xxx

    xxx,xxx is just an estimate.
