Unfortunately my online marketing life is full of tragedies although I have had some successes. One of the Greatest losses to me, was one of my websites which I started to work for, the website itself was designed and made to be the portal of my new and little programming and website design corporation which I founded recently.
In my country there are not a lot of sites which are working on this field, but though it's still hard to get on google page 1 for my targeted keyword. So I consulted to an SEO expert which told me to do so:
1- put as much as quality rich articles about your field
2- publish your posts on social networks
He told me to put a lot of time on writting or translating big and useful articles on my website and to use my targeted keywords in these articles to attract both users and search engines to my site for those keyword, then my rankings will get better.
I started to do so, I put as long as 4 months of my time on this. I translated/wrote about 100 high quality articles (each article was at least 400-600 word long). The result was a few visits each day to those articles, but nothing happened to rankings for targeted keywords.
Yes it's a big lie: "THAT'S ALL ABOUT CONTENT", I can guarantee that the most important thing in SEO is link building and updating the site regularly along with it. While due to advice of my SEO consultant I did nothing for link building I failed.

I agree that there are many other things that work for a website's online presence apart from the content. However, content is one of the most important aspects that needs to be interesting and informative. Apart from content, one must pay attention to the factors like sources of backlinks, social media websites, online forums / communities etc.

Raman sorry to hear about your experiences. It can be daunting to say the least when you put in so much time into a project and nothing comes of it.
I have seen sites rank (and that is recently) with insignificant content so I would have to agree with you to some extent. But I still believe that it is easier to rank if you have quality content. So do not give up with providing your sites with quality content. You must also focus on building links to it as well. Don't stop either.

It is not CONTENT that is important it is RELEVANT CONTENT. Stuffing all your keywords into articles is not going to get you better ranking unless users engage with the content. Google judges the quality and relevance of content based on user behavour, if a user clicks on your link on a result page and then mmediately returns to the result page, then Google considers that the content was not relevant, and it will not rank as high the next time that search term is used. Just chasing keywords to get visitors is not going to improve your rankings. You need to be targeting users who want to read your articles and thus you get a low bounce rate and high engagement.

It’s wrong to say that it’s all about content, because content gives an exposure to site traffic, and to generate traffic in search engine you need to write high quality content relevant to the topic, and user friendly which provide information to the readers for which they come online, as well as you need to generate some backlinks from authority sources which will helpful to increase site ranking in search engine.

Just content is not enough. You need to do link building as well. Focus on quality guest blogging, blog comments and more.

It is not that it is all about content but the fact that it is important is because it is what people search for -- content.
So I think it just make perfect sense for google to say that it is all about content. Content is just one of those essential element in SEO as well as link building so I think every element in SEO are important in their own ways.

4 months is not an incredibly long time. New sites often take 6-9 months to get anywhere, traffic-wise, unless you're going completely mental and doing tons and tons of marketing.

Additionally, it doesn't matter how few people are doing something in your country: while your local results will do better, the fact is that "programming and web design" is one of the most over-subscribed freelance business niches in the world. Everyone and their pet dog is doing it: you have to compete with all those other people - and big companies - on a global scale. Your chance of getting on page 1 of Google is, quite frankly, almost negligible, except in a purely local search.

"It's all about content" is not a literal expression. This is the problem when an American speaks, is transcribed and is quoted. The expression means content is the most important thing, rather than the only thing. In reality, content is important, link building is important, authority is important, keywords are important... and about 200 other things are in the list!

High quality content is one way to increase your website traffic. But there also many factors to consider to improve your sites ranking. Developing your website to be an SEO-friendly site and making high-quality backlinks are just some of the many ways too make your site viewable in Google rankings.

While creating links, make sure that you get links from high quality authority sites. Authority sites often has good metrics like high page rank, high domain authority etc. Also, look for backlinks of those sites. If you are able to get even couple of links from them, then your rankings can get lot better.

@Raman Diyar There are many businesses in the market (either online or offline), No one would reveal the real things to you! If they are going to reveal you by indicating it as "REAL ONE". Don't believe on it!

What do you think? Google says content does matter, so all people are rushing towards the content only? (Sorry I'm not against anyone). There is something interesting cooking in the headquarters of the Google! No one knows the SEO (even me). Just don't believe on false facts. Now you will respond me with your question "is useful articles are enough to rank in google"? I would say "NO" .

Being SEO specialist, It's quite interesting (and funny) for me when one leading SEO company revealed the secret of Google ! Wooh! (Just 15-20 days ago)

In short: On-page, Off-Page, Content, Backlinks is a Pawns and hiding a real king beside it!

Hey @Bestservices4u What about low quality links and websites with an average ranking factors? Don't you consider to make backlinks from those sites? Only high quality websites you prefer?

There isn't one magical factor that will cause a website to rank well, it is a wide variety of factors that will help a website rank better. Relavent content is one of many factors.

Well... Sorry, but I can only PARTICULARLY agree with you... For me, content is the most important thing.
    Proof:
    - If you write a HIGH quality and optimized article and put A LOT of great keywords combinations there with some good backlinks you can easily rank for some long-tail keywords within the same article...

Of course Link Building is important, but there is no reason and it would be very difficult to rank a website for DIFFERENT long-tail keywords WITHOUT content! :)

One thing I have noticed over the last couple of months is that CLICKS to your site through social media sharing has been playing a slight roll in ranking your site. Seems pretty weird, but I have noticed it on the sites I currently rank...and some of those sites have little content as well.

Though I still recommend quality unique content on a site and to update it regularly, try seeking out ways to get your site or individual pages shared more often through social media.

    Holla!

SEO is not based on link building only as well as just updating the site regularly.

What do you mean by this? "HIGH quality and optimized article" and "put A LOT of great keywords combinations"
Would you mind to explain these statements and be specific?

Everyone can speculate all they want... I go by my own experimentation on my small personal site. Ihas very few links, no promotion, and the keyword density is quite low. The only thing it has going for it is content, and most of the pages come up page one of the SERPs everyday; and a handful regularly come up number one against competition with gigantic sites like Stack Overflow. However it is not just the content, but how well the content engages the user. I have very low bounce rates an high time on the site, and Google interprets that to means the users found the content relevant; AND GUESS WHAT? Googles stated objective with changes to weighting is to try and make results more relevant.

Do whatever you want with keywords, backlinks and anything else that floats your boat, but in the end if the users bounce and go back to the SERPs without spending time it wil cost you Google juice, and for a commercial site high traffic does not mean anything unless you get conversions; so the same thin applies: GOOD CONTENT THAT IS RELEVANT!

You need good content that is relevant
    Unique content
    Enough content
    Backlinks from social media sites
That people stay on the site long enough
    .com names preferred
    The older the better
No links to sites with crap on
    No flash
    No javascripts
    Updated frequently
    Better be found by accident

    geeeeee
