Exactly, how does Google judge the intention of a paid like for SERP efforts or a paid link for Advertising.

Come to think about it, they probably couldnt care less about the difference and would penalize both. wanna advertise, what the heck do u think adwords is for.

I see nothing wrong with paid links. We're all here to make a living and I gotta eat too, so if someone wants to buy a spot on one of my sites then it should be up to them whether it should be allowed and not some snitch trying to cause a problem.

Any of those sites get penalized as a result? Seems to be a waste of time.

Yeah, that is something that was in google webmaster tools for a long time now.

You can report any site that you think are selling links.

Personally the main weakness I see with the option with reporting paid links is that, competitors might misuse it or frame you to get ahead of competition.

i think reporting paid links is important to prevent widespread abuse of the google PR calculation, but I would only do it on sites where there is blatant misuse

The "google PR calculation" and it's blatant bias is a whole thread on it's own. They have too much power and now, in strategic fashion typical of big companies (and countries at war), they want to pit people against each other on the internet. Can it be used against your competition? Sure it can and I've seen it done myself.

It's a totally unfair system created by a company that's becoming more corrupted by greed and power as they grow even bigger. Some countries even have laws against companies wielding too much influence, and they DO influence anyone and everyone who does business on the world wide web. Don't kid yourself.

    What about directories?
All they do is sell links. Will Yahoo directory disappear? Under the argument that paid links affect their search engine results, Google has been stripping directories out of PR with severe penalties.

Some examples of what used to high PR directories:
    Alive Directory
    Haabaa Directory

These sites don't show first page rankings in Google anymore even if you perform a search for them by name. In the official release in Google Webmaster central, any link in a website that passes pagerank is subject to a penalty (being stripped of PR).

I guess all we can do is "keep it on topic or get an infraction" - Unknown DP Moderator

Google isn't preventing you from selling links. What Google cares about is trying to reduce the impact of webmasters trying to game the SERPs, since Google depends on its users - the searchers - for income, and users will move to other search engines if the results they get are crap. So you are free to sell links, and Google is free to penalize that in the SERPs.

(I've also read that Google thinks it's fine to sell links if you add the rel="no follow" tag. That means the sold links for traffic are fine, but those to boost PR are not.)

i really cant digest this new concept of reporting paid links, there are so many issues with it. Why google is getting in conflicts all the time especially after its launch of competitive browser against ie n ff

This is simply absurd, this is like asking rebels to turn in their guns. Kind of absurd to report links...

I also wonder how paid-links stuff is going to affect the google search engines.

I noticed this option a long time ago in google webmaster tools, I think it's
bad because many people are exploiting it. This just makes it easier for your
competitor to sabotage your site and vice versa.

    I agree...done.
The funniest part is what is at the bottom of the submission form...like we are doing a "good deed".
