How can I tell if I am in the sandbox?

Doing a search for allinanchor:"keyword" is the best way to tell. My general rule is if you have go through and search page by page looking for your URL and find it then you are not in the sandbox. But if you get tired of looking and your fingers start to hurt and you quit before you find it then you are in the sandbox.

Are there any other way's, perhaps more definitively, to tell if you're stuck in the sandbox?

There are a lot of useful information. Of course we do not know all details about sandbox for sure, but we could make some hypotheses and verify them on everyday practice. And if they (hypotheses) work it does not matter how real (right) they are. They work and help to earn money.

Aaron- as per my knowledge, if we do lots of spam work then our website go to the sandbox and if we stop all the spam work like using lots of keywords in alt & title, then after 10-15 days, website come back on trick.

Nice comprehensive information, but i am still confuse so i want to ask you a few things.... i have a site namely http://1ind.com/ which i created 14 days ago... it was an expired domain i didnt knew it. so may be because of this reason it start tracking traffic in a few days... n in last few days my page views were 4000, 12000, and 8000, it is an exams result blog so i just write about indian exams results... but all of a sudden last night my traffic went too low... and now there are only 7, 8 users online and most of the traffic is not coming from google, it is coming from bookmarking sites etc..... I dont have any duplicate content n not even any thing wrong in my view, People who are spamming are ranking well enough but my previous posts are gone on 3rd or 4rth, 5th page of google search result.... Is this sudden loss of traffic is due to this reason that i had not posted any results news of today? but there should be some traffic for the previous posts i think so, why my previous posts not ranking well in search results?

My posts are coming on 3rd 4rth page of search results? So is my site in Google Sandbox? Bec previously my posts were on 1st page of google search results.... n if i am suffering from google sandbox effect then according to you this sound effect is for specific keywords then how can it effect my posts ranking? bec every time the results are announced from any different university or colleges so there is no specific keywords on which google sandbox effect can be applied... n even if they apply this sandbox effect on the keywords "exams results 2011" then still the other posts which do not contain these keywords should rank well in the search results which is not the case... so i disagree with your point that google sandbox effect is only for specifc keywords... it just effect the whole site.. all contents... So now tell me what i need to do to rank on first page again i m fed up of google crappy algorithm, google bots are blind making me angry all the time.... Please advise me i want my posts search engine results back in one week... Tell me any real tricks to play with google, n if you guys who are so damn experienced having tons of years of experience cant handle these google sandbox then we newbies dont need you... You are all useless. Sorry for bad behavior but i m really in bad mood, i want to ..... google ...s.o.b..

However, some people think it's a link aging filter - so they think that links to your site are not being given any weight until a period has passed.

After reading all this, its reinforced my belief in chasing long tail keywords with searches. If you use enough of them and rank highly it has the same desired effect in driving gtraffic as chasing your tail with the high search keywords.

My SEO teacher had tought us that when a Search Engine Crawler is unable to understand whether it has followed black hat or white hat then it puts our site in sandbox. In this time period, we are unable to find our site in search engine searching with any of the keywords. is it right or wrong?

This can be frustrating when you know the links are there but you don't see them. I find that there are many links I don't see even with webmaster tools which require authentication of ownership.
