Google Results

I am wanting to understand how Google calculates the number of results you see on the top of page when you type in a query?

The example I have attached searches for articles that contain the term "michael jackson" and records the number of articles that contain the phrase.

There is no spike in volume in June 2009 which one would expect. So it leads me to the conclusion that Google uses some kind of smoothing algorithm or something to that effect.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this topic?

Actually there is an 87% increase from June to July, that's quite a bit when the number is in the millions range.
