Can some clarify why when I type a keyword such as "sell my car for free" in google with or without quotes that the results say "Results 1 - 100 of about 2,650,000" but when you click on page 6 or whatever the last results page is, it the says "Results 401 - 459 of 459". What is correct and why? Thanks in advance
Google's results display is just an estimate. They have traditionally limited the number of total results generated to 1000, but recently they have been limiting some searches to far lower quantities. They undoubtedly prefer to devote their computing resources to more productive efforts than generating so many results that will not be helpful to most users. I mean, after you've gone through the first 200-300 results, if you haven't found what you were looking for, you're not likely to find it in the next 700-800 unless you're just researching the search results.
Thanks for the reply, I was of course interested to see how much competition I had for certain keywords and just needed clarification.
