I mean this isn't great or anything but I was sort of shocked to fine my site had a google page rank of 4/10 on the google toolbar...however after adding some content it jumped back down to zilch. is this common

    nope....toolbar often doesnt work

takes Google almost 90 days to update PR ...

watch the threads here at DP as people try to become the next SuperSEO and guess the next date PR updates....

Google does nothing as instant as what you thought you saw;)

    Hope this helps

Try this tool at this link:
    http://www.seochat.com/seo-tools/future-pagerank/
It will give you an idea if there is a change taking place. Sometimes you see a certain PR rating in the toolbar and a few minutes/hours later its different. That is because you might be getting results from a different datacentre. If you check your PR on this tool and see different values across the different datacentres, it is probable that the new PR would be your PR once the update is completed. (hope I said this all correctly).

I dont wish to offend you but what you have posted is not right...this has little to do with what data center a website is on. (And why people should focus less on measuring and more on adding content) Also the tool you are linking to, along with all other predicitors, measures future pagerank based on incorrect parameters.

PR is updated daily within Google the company...IE if you work for Google you will see live PR.

PR for the rest of us is only updated once every three months.

Since people tend not to believe me when I post ..I got this straight from Matt Cutts blog.

The above and much more can be found here:

    http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/type/googleseo/page/15/

    Hope it helps clarify somethings.

    Peace

I'd focus on the metrics before worrying about PR... if you see month over month increase in traffic, you are doing good. Wether or not you have a PR 3 or 4 or 5 or whatever.

I dont think it need 90 days to update. What had been stated is 90 days but if your site generate massive of traffic then i guess it will be updated within 40 to 50 days. that is what happen to my site before. I got PR7 within 2 months time. Im quite suprise as well =))

In the past few months Google needed to do a couple of updates a bit quicker than normal... to resolve issues from Big Daddy. So it possible your site saw a nice quick bump....has to be some good to Google for some webmasters, right??

However being as Matt Cutts works for Google... I am going to go with him being the source to pay attention to in this regards.

As far as the traffic equation... it has zero to do with PageRank which is the value of links.....traffic will increase ranking in search engines free results pages... but it would not have much to do with PageRank, other than a large amount of backlinks may be generated along with the traffic spike.

    Peace

No problem ...but I would add that the history of 90 days between updates has been noted since 2005 pre big daddy (how weird is that?)

After Big Daddy I would hope (<--keyword) that updates would be monthly?? At least something faster than once a quarter....

Odd that the suits on Wall Street have no clue about any of this it seems.......
