    Hi,
Google updates PR on the basis of inbound and out bound links.
If you have quality inbound links, that's added advantage of your site PR.

I would guess importance to the niche has something to do with it also.

No it doesn't, actually. You can read more about PR by accessing my previous link. Niche has nothing to do with PR. It's all about IBLs.

There is a possibility that today the algorithm is more complicated. The original version assumed all links are equal, and now a patent by Google hints at a possibility that link quality may be not just a ranking factor, but a weighting coefficient in PageRank formula itself. Bill Slawski wrote a great article about that patent at http://www.seobythesea.com/?p=3806

OK. Great info and I must thank you for it. But PR is one thing and a rank in SERPs is another thing.

PR as we all know is just one of the many signals Google uses for ranking. The value of one link can be another one. These are independent. Why am I saying that? Because as you may heard Google wants to abandon the PR model. And this will happen sooner or later. I don't think they will just flush an algorithm if it was as complex as Bill Slawski describes it.

I don't want to impute that what he have written in that article is false or wrong. The contrary, I guess he has a strong point. But his thesis on the new Page Rank is based on an An early paper by the founders of Google. PR and link values are 2 different things. We should pay more attention to details.

I understand that. Google has stated many times that PR is only one of about 200 ranking factors, and they may remove it from the toolbar, because it gives the webmasters wrong ideas about where to direct their optimization efforts.

However, it makes sense for Google to continue using PR internally, because combined with the other factors, it is very useful for ranking.

I read somewhere that google had changed his algorithm, and the backlinks are not anymore the main factor. Don't know if it is true.
