Does anyone know how to find out if your site is in a black list or being penalized? I get the feeling that all my efforts are being filtered and I'd like to find out why. My site is all opt in membership, we don't even do any emailing to our membership. We were using an email service provider that I found out was linked to sites that were spamming - but I moved away from them almost 2 years ago - so can you be tared with the same brush as long as your site is active?

Black listed and penalized are two different things.

If your website was listed in google and you're not sure it does now, go to google.com and use commands as: site:www.yourdomain.com, cache:www.yourdomain.com to see if your website is known by google.

If there are no results information about your website try to investigate why you're website is blacklisted, http://www.google.com/webmasters/guidelines.html use this information page. After you're done with the changes file a request form for reinclusion, http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/reinclusion-request-howto/

If you're website in penalized you might get a sitback in serp, this might happen because you got too many links in a very short period of time. When building links get links from content relevant pages and vary with your text-links.

Thanks for your response - I am curious - I have one site that I have had since 1999. Never paid any attention to the links or SEO until lately. This AM i went into the site and saw a PR3 - wow. An hour later - PR0 - now later in the day PR 3 again. Another one of my sites I was excited to see a PR1 - then it dissappeared - then it was back again. Could it have anything to do with the fact that many of my links back to me are from PR 5 to 7 sites from Europe or Australia and it's a time of day thing?

PR is fluxuating right now due to what I've heard called the "google mess" or jagger part-2. You cant really eval PR until all the dust settles. The crap is still flying, so hang tight on pr.

    Yes.
By the way the same to the site: command. Your website can be indexed a year ago, and can just be gone suddenly (I suppose that means it's google dance has been started :))

PR isn't a rollercoaster, it is actually pretty constant
it's just the Toolbar that is fluctuating.
If you are banned your URl obviously wont show up.
If you are penalised it is more likely due to bad outbound links, gambling, porn etc.
    check here
    http://www.bad-neighborhood.com/

    If that is clear then
1 How competitive is your main keywords
2.How much PR artillery are you hitting that anchor with
    3. Even if you have high PR linking to you it's not enough.
Divide PR by two if not homepage or two thirds if you know individual page PR
Then divide by number of outbounds
That is the firepower that you have placed on you anchor!
