Yes, I have also heard of the "Squidoo Slap." I'm hard pressed to document my sources, but I believe that whereas it was once fairly easy to have a Squidoo page rank highly, that is no longer the case. It also appears that many Squidoo pages have lost their ranking. I also know that Squidoo has made it a little tougher for lenses to be included in their search directory. They pretty much tell you what to do to get it in the search directory, though. I'm guessing that Squidoo is trying to weed out junk pages and require some commitment to putting good content on the lenses.

Squidoo had a huge spam problem a while back, where a group of folks created thousands of "lenses" on frivolous things like 'hiccup' or some such. They lost a HUGE amount of ranking in Google at that time and although they have corrected the problem and taken steps to ensure it doesn't happen again, they have not come back to their previous position. It has nothing to do with the "Web 2.0" aspect.

cheapseo, its not the design Google is penalizing. Its the misuse of the sites by some people to generate traffic.
