google penalized my site - need advice

I have a site that had a pr 2 and now it's at zero, it's been at zero for about a week now. The site also went from pr 2 to pr 0 in one week. This was due to the fact that I change scripts and the site had a lot of 404s, it is very difficult to do 301s with the new script, so I just left it be.

After I saw that my site went to pr 0, I went back to the old script asap. I was also told that the new script contained hidden fields that google didn't like, but were part of the script. This was also another reason why I switch back.

Did I do the right choice in going back to the script? What can I do right now to get my pr back.

If you switch back, that doesn't mean you will get the PR back. And are you sure your site is penalized? It might've just been the pagerank update and you werent building enough links?

i think your site script contain duplicate content so google dont index your site if your web pages contains duplicates ..just change unique and fresh content then throw lot of back links from high pr sites.

Good scenario..You should have changed the script with the help of an SEO expert.Anyways it doesnt affects in google or others..If your code to content ratio is perfect.
Then use unique web content as iwillguide told.Never make the backlinks as a junk.Keep the internal linking also strong.
As google updated it may have found out the issues!!!
try by putting the exact url name only in google and search..it is the simplest way to analyse whether the site is penalysed..
    Best wishes ..

    search in google
    site:<yoursite>

If there are search results for your site, this means you are not penalized but google found some errors probably 404
What you need to do is check your site using webmaster tools crawler errors, download the list of missing pages and create 301 redirects for them in your .htaccess file.

this happens because google indexed you site in the past and after your changes Google is not finding the indexed pages anymore.
Do as I tell you and your site will probably reappear in a week or so.

I just had a similar scenario where my site was seriously altered due to recovering from the JS trojan that is infecting some sites. I literally had to delete hundreds of files that are now 404's =/

I haven't lost PR but it's going to be a pain to get rid of those 404's

Ok, this could be for a number of reasons, you could have lost a lot of content and a lot of your SEO work was affected. You will need to rebuild and double your SEO efforts. HOWEVER, I suggest you do not worry so much about PR, concentrate on increasing your SERPs. You have three months until the next PR update, so that will eventually fall back into place. If you DID lose your PR then do not spend too much time dwelling over it because you are not going to get it back by complaining. I suggest again that you double your SEO efforts, continue to build quality links. Write and distribute quality content and unique articles. And continue your on-page SEO efforts.

Well it's kinda hard to build unique articles since my site is a picture upload service. It has about 50k pictures, and all those links that the site had were dead, but now they are working since I switch back. Should I just ride it out, or what are some recommendations.

PR is not that impotrtant at all. As long as your site is at the top of the SERP, youneedn't worry about your PR. Just keep on your seo effort.

have you lost rankings in google? If you haven't then don't worry, what's more important pagerank or rankings? If you have also don't panic, wait for 10 days, you may have a temporary penalty which google often lifts.

I would recommend you stick with a new script and find the ways to do 301 redirect every pages, page by page instead. A lot of 404 pages cannot be fixed overnight after being found by Google. You have to be patient and wait until Google acknowledge about the change.

The first mistake is your ignore on fix the 404 pages issued from the begining. You cannot just change to the old scripts, got an old URL structure and hope for everythings go back as it was. Google will be more likely to stopped from visiting your website for a period of time because your site has been defined as "low quality website with a lot of 404 pages" in Google perspective. Apart from doing 301 redirect, you should get your site verified via Google Webmaster Tools and submit new sitemap to help Google acknowledge about the change faster.

You should always make sure that you use absolute URLs and not just relative URLs as these are much my effective for search engine optimization

I believe it was the recent pagerank update. Just start building backlink and see where you go!

    This is what really happened...

The most important factor giving your site it's PR is the internal links. This is simply because all backlinks go to your index, your index points to internals, and internals point back to your index. At each step the link juice passed on is reduced by a dampening factor of .85 or so (damping factor * PR = PR passed). It's a big circle that gives you PR. When all your internal links disappeared the link circle was broken and all that PR was lost. This is not a penalty. This is poor decision making and unfortunately it happened just before the PR update and google didn't have time to re-index your internal links. Fix your internal links and your PR will come back on the next update in 3 - 4 months. Even though your PR will say 0 for awhile it doesn't mean it is actually 0. Most likely it will raise for before the update and you will find out after the update.
