Google Pagerank vs Alexa and Technorati rankings

I have a sneaking suspicion that you can acheive an automatic pagerank of 3 or 4 without really trying if you have a site hosted on a popular social site, such as wordpress.com or blogspot.com - as opposed to hosting the software yourself on your own domain.

For fun, today I used the text link ads blog juice tool to see where my site, www.agrandioseblog.com currently is. It has a current Google Page rank of 0, I used this tool here to check: http://www.iwebtool.com/pagerank_checker

So my page rank is zero - but my blog juice is 0.9. For the heck of it I look at some sites in the blog juice ranking that have ratings from 0.0 to 0.3.

What I found shocked me. The very dead last site, deadia.blogs.friendster.com has a google pagerank of 4! The blog juice on this site is 0.0 with 0 Alexa ranking, 0 Technorati rank, 0 links! What the hell?
So I look at some other sites waaaaaay below my 0.9 ranking, on sites associated with <name>.wordpress.com <name>.blogspot.com and they all have google pageranks ranging from 3 - 4!

Now I'm a newbie to all this - but I've been busting my butt trying to build traffic, links etc. I probably might have a pagerank of 6 if I had hosted on one of their platforms!

I was under the impression that it's always better to host on your own domain, but this kinda sucks somewhat if this is happening ...

So to the more experienced SEO gurus, which is better? Is it better to get your own domain or host on one of these more popular platforms who usually have a pagerank of 9 or so?

 i know nothing is proven, but this is an interesting theory. i have noticed A LOT of dead blogs from the more popular blogging sites to have high pr as compared to some really decent ones with pr 0.

i honestly wouldn't mind trying this type of thing out and thank you for bringing up your thoughts :)
