Great attitude Jim. You'r too experienced a webmaster to worry about the actual visible PR.:)

Dude - PR is calculated with summation score of a site's backlink strength and not summation of what your say.

If you submit your site regularly on search engines it won't give you any PR - but if you can attract links to your site -- and valuable links at that - you would get good PR. Simple.

@ OP -- focus on traffic - not that green pixel. It would give ya lots of satisfaction and benefit.

    I'm with etc :) hehe.

As far as preparing yourself, you can prepare to freak out and say "what the crap? How did I lose 2 PR points." But I digress :(

I would probably clean up broken links and useless pages, otherwise put "no-follow" on all the pages that you aren't trying to get PageRank for.

One thing that I found that does wonders is adding a blog and putting up serious quality content for about 20 days or so and Google will start coming by more often and the PageRank will increase as well.

Well said! I don't know why people get so excited about PR...and to only do preparation for the google update is just stupid. These people don't get very far in business on the web.

I've found that Page Rank is adjusted on an interval that is not set in stone. PR has adjusted on sites I've managed on occasions that are far from the regularly expected "seasons".

Exactly, here is something to think about:

If you have a pagerank 9 link from some spammy site, a few days later it may only be worth pagerank 0 in the background, even though the bar will display PR 9 for a few months or so.

Also, if you make a post on a legit pagerank 9 forum, that post will be grey, but in the background, it might be a pagerank 8 or something. That's why some forum posts have high pagerank because during the update, Google just took an instant shapshot of whatever it was in the background.

I bought a couple of links on high PR sites, so hopefully mine will increase.

Not that it really matters but I'm hoping that a few of the larger PR4's I work on move up to PR5. I'm also hoping that my newer projects hit that PR2-3 sweet spot.

I'm just started my first blog so no PR yet. I don't know what kind of preparation should I do but I guess I have to build traffic first before I could have the PR :)

I'll keep my posting frequent, build some more backlinks. I'm hoping to reach a pagerank of 1 at least on two of my websites. Expecting nothing more than PR0 on my newest blog, although I may get a pleasant surprise xD.

Preparation is to be done continuously, not just at time PR is updating.

Yes you are right and this is what Google has to say about Page Rank:

Page Rank is just a metric, but not the metric. According to the link of mattcutts page rank is an expression your reputability and relevance...as judged by Google.
How your readers judge you is a different matter. That could be better or worse. ;)

I don't do anything either. I focus more on people (customers or potential customers). They have bigger effect on the top line.
