Google PageRank transfer after 301 redirect

    How long does it take for the Google PageRank to be transfered after a URL is permanently redirected to the new webpage? Will it be transfered upon indexation of the new page or after the "next PR update"?

    It seems to be different every time! In fact I have had the transfer take anywhere from 3weeks to 3months.
