Google only shows my domain...

Discussion in 'Site & Server Administration' started by exam, Sep 3, 2004.

In January I registered 3 domains for a dictionary project I'm working on. (tomisimo.org .net and .com) They had the hosting site's default page up for several months. About 2 months ago, I got the site up and running. On Aug. 13th, the Googlebot hit my main page tomisimo.org. the 3 domains show up in Google results, but only show the domain and no description. The .net and .com domains point to the .org, which is the "official" one that I want to use. What is going on and how can I fix it?

    Thanks in advance,
    -D.

    That's natural.

Do you have some kind of redirect going on with the other 2 domains? (Maybe a 301?)

Google is designed to pick redirects up, or at least recognise that they are there.

Yahoo! on the other hand, may well be different. Slurp seems to have some difficulty with picking up 301 redirects at the moment. I'm sure that it will change eventually but for the time being, we'll have to see.

Yes, the .net and .com domains have a 301 permanently moved HTTP redirect.

The thing that strikes me strange is that the googlebot already visited the page, but it does not show up in the index. It only has a link to the domains instead of showing the page title and the description.

Is this normal? Will it go away with Google next update?

Not too sure really. I think that the description should turn up at some point.

I had a pretty large site indexed the other day (About 500 or so pages),.

When it first appeared in the SERP's, it had no description, but it was there after a few days.

So you think that I shouldn't worry about it for now? How long would you give it for Google to show the desc.? Its been about 3 weeks without the desc.

I can't tell you for sure. I can't even promiss (sp?!?) you that what I said is even 100% right. (No one could. Google is to unpredictable to say for sure). But generally, I just wait it out and see what happenes.

I wouldn't worry about it really. I'm sure that the descriptions will turn up sooner or later. That is unless you have black hat stuff on your site (which I doubt.) So don't worry about, and see what happens.

Wow! I didn't have to wait very long. The .org domain now has the description text and hopefully the other two will follow soon. (or dissapear)

If the other two are using a 301, then it should only display the .org.

    That's good news though. Quick.

This is really strange. Can anyone explain why the description showed up yesterday, but today the 3 domains just show up w/o a desc. like before ?? I guess I don't understand how Google works.
