I submit lots of blogs with backlinks to my website's various pages on Vox, Xanga, Ibibo and Wordpress etc. Soon my effort worked and Google started to show over 2000 backlinks to my website but now suddenly backlinks has come down to 900 but all my blogs are still on these website. What could be the problem.

jakomo is right google only shows a certain percentage of your backlinks and there are certain types of links that may be depreciated by google that will not count towards your backlinks. However, you will be able to see these links in yahoo site explorer.
Google only shows the high quality links. If you want to see a better list check google webmaster or yahoo. They will show all of your links
it sounds like he's already checking his number of backlinks somewhere else because google would never show you 900 backlinks anyway without going into webmaster tools i think what he means is that his number of backlinks fluctuates a lot - which i have experienced as well this can sometimes happen especially with blogs, forums and social bookmarking
That happens all the time, actually. Backlink checkers can vary from day to day...even from hour to hour. Even if you use the same backlink checker. I wouldn't worry too much about it.
Also too I notce, that if you have multiple links on one page with the same domain, Google will only count one For instance, I have a backlink on this blog: http://claudiaang19944.blogspot.com/2008/03/brookline-apartments-for-rent-how-to.html It's only counting 1 of my backlinks... since all are the same domain
