Hi folks. My page, which is in my sig, has an oddity.... if I look for cache:http://www.thetailsection.com/ in google... I get nothing however if I site:thetailsection.com and click on cache for the first entry, which is the main page, I get a cache of my index. Any thoughts on this?
Let's see, could it be the first few hundred lines of code are JS and popups and unders way before the content is reached? Could it be the index follow tag that is specifically mentioned as not to be used for inclusion in the google webmaster guidelines? It's pretty offensive IMO. But hey, you asked.
I'm a little naive at this so explain to me why it is offensive? I'm just trying to monetize my site. I don't mean this to be inflammatory, BTW, I just don't get it. I'm not trying to dis my visitors. I appreciate help, no matter how it is presented, but perhaps you missed the point. When I used site: to look at my indexed pages, it is in there. When I use cache: directly, it isnt. This is all aside from the fact that I am on page one for some of my primary keywords and haven't a trace of black-hat anywhere on my site. (how's that for offensive?)
looks like its just your main page... the forums look ok http://72.14.203.104/search?num=100...he:www.thetailsection.com/forums/&btnG=Search although I see the plain jane default vb where the cache one has a cool theme.
Yeah, theme was eating up some bandwidth. I'm working on a lighter version now. The whole site was recently recoded from a heavily modified blogger template to a "from scratch" movable type template. Although, this problem predates the change by a couple of days.
Just following up on your advice again. I was unable to find anything about index follow in the google webmaster guidelines. I did find this on another SEO site: "Webloggers: use the meta tags to help the Googlebot index only your permalinks, not your constantly changing front page. To do this, use <meta name="robots" content="noindex, follow" > on your front page and <meta name="robots" content="index, follow" > on your permalinked pages" Can you point me to the google webmaster guidlines entry that forbits this kind of meta use? Is it good info?
i wouldnt use those... just use a robots.txt.. search google for syntax or search matt cutts blog Also I think you have a great site... although I think your efforts to monitize the traffic are taking away from your users experience. You might want to look at some other models for revenue.
Any suggestions? I'm overly concious of that, but the site is just doing too well for me to feel good about pulling ads. (Even though I'd love to pull them.) Part of my problem right now is I have all my eggs in one basket. I'm trying to get some other sites off the ground, then I can spread the loss.
I think the reason your site is not cached is cause google is having issues reading it honestly... that is purely a guessthough. you have a lot of javascript and stuff on there. Do you use google sitemaps? You get a report of what has been indexed.
Ah... good point. I did a server move recently and sure enough, Google could not access the site when it went to crawl. Mystery solved. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Also thank you for the monetizing advice, I've researched a few things and am going to start peeling back those ads.
I have nothing to add to the discussion other than to say I like your site (because I love Lost), and I agree with the monetizing comments. Those moving/flashing ads are usually a site-killer for me. Those things kill my eyes. Good luck and keep up the good work!
